2nd Trimester

COVID & Preeclampsia

I am 25 weeks pregnant and had COVID 2 weeks ago. It was a pretty mild case: a slight fever and otherwise cold symptoms. This is my first pregnancy but I don’t have any other risk factors for preeclampsia. My Dr said there is an association between having had covid and then later developing preeclampsia and recommends taking a baby aspirin for the remainder of my pregnancy. Has anyone else heard this or had a similar experience?

Re: COVID & Preeclampsia

  • I have heard of this, but my doctor said it was not necessary. I had a similar, mild case of Covid about a month ago (at 12/13 weeks pregnant). I asked my doctor about it and he said that unless there are other risk factors, Covid alone doesn’t raise your risk of complications (again, barring a severe case that involved hospitalization, intubation, etc.) Either way, I’d do whatever your doctor recommends! Best of luck for a healthy and smooth pregnancy!

  • I got COVID late in my second trimester in my last pregnancy. I had to take a baby aspirin just to prevent blood clots. If they recommend it, I would do it. Blood clots can be a serious issue during pregnancy.
  • I had COVID very early on in my pregnancy (5 weeks). Like you, I too had a mild case and have been advised to take baby aspirin for the remainder of my pregnancy.

Interesting, I just had covid 2 weeks ago, still have lingering symptoms but I'm 22 weeks rn, I wonder if my midwife will suggest anything at my next appointment
  • I haven't had covid yet, fingers crossed, but I did have sever pre-e with my first pregnancy, induced at 36w+5. It was not a fun time. Take the baby asprin. I would not wish that type of delivery on anyone.

  • I have said the same words as Stashattack to many people before. I was also induced, emergency c-section, and would not wish it on anyone.
I didn't take the recommended dose and it didn't help that the doc sold the idea to me as a "blood thinner". When I looked it up, it is what helps the baby get more nutrients and everything..so it does help. Also, I later (after my baby was born) found out I should have began taking the low dose aspirin 3 months prior to becoming pregnant!
But I would want noone to share my experience (which is shared in the section for birth stories here).
  • I didn't need to have a c-section. But was induced. The worst part is the magnesium sulfate. It makes you so tired and you aren't allowed to get up and walk around. You are literally bed bound except a short walk to a portable toilet. And my bp remained high for almost 2 weeks post delivery. It was not fun.

I'm starting my baby aspirin regimen at 12w for this baby.
