Preeclampsia

Was anyone advised to take low dose Tylenol to help prevent preeclampsia? Looking to get peoples opinion on this, ideally I don’t want to, but it was recommended.

Re: Preeclampsia

  • Not Tylenol but low dose baby aspirin. I had pre-eclampsia with my first pregnancy and had to be induced.  The low dose baby aspirin is a preventative.

  • My apologies, low dose aspirin, ok so definitely would recommend taking it if doctor says I should?
  •  I would think so.  Did you have pre-eclampsia in a previous pregnancy too?
  • This is my first pregnancy, my midwife suggested I take low dose aspirin because it’s the 1st pregnancy and because of my BMI
  • Ah ok.  I’m not familiar with all the reasons that low dose aspirin would be prescribed other than box of pre-eclampsia.
  • Hi! Yes I have a bmi and am 36 and I’m taking a baby aspirin as recommend by my doctor. Didn’t have to do this with my first pregnancy when I was 32 with same bmi but I think it depend on how many risk factors you have.

Yes, the low dose aspirin--it helps the blood/nutrients flow to the baby. Preeclampsia is most common with first births too and I didn't take the recommended dose not knowing much about it and now I wish I did!
I had preeclampsia HELLP (a form of preeclampsia). The birth story I wrote where birth stories are and I hope no woman goes through what I did and why I write this now.
It was an emergency c-section and I was put under-therefore have no memory of the birth and a day was wheeled in (hooked up to an i.v. and couldn't have ability to walk let alone stand up) to see my baby, who was having his own birth issues at 4.9lbs.

Now that it is a year later, I have found out that ideally I should have began low dose aspirin 3 months prior to becoming pregnant. As well, I should have been taking 5mg of folic acid.
I'm "advanced maternal age" and over 250lbs. So those combined made me a higher risk for preeclampsia off the bat. Since really that is still something doctors are still trying to understand and why nearly everything is labelled a "risk factor".

But I wish I could go back, and done better thinking maybe then the preeclampsia HELLP wouldn't have happened.
So, please do consider taking it and I wish you all the best and a healthy, happy birth ☺

As well, I hope the midwife didn't suggest "Tylenol" as that has been very bad for births.
Low dose Aspirin, yes, Tylenol--No No No!
  • no other prescribed low dose aspirin, I went back to my notes I miss spoke on this thread when I wrote Tylenol.

Thank you for the great insight, I wasn’t feeling so comfortable taking it.  They recommended because my first baby plus high bmi so I think I should play it safe and take the recommendation.
  • My sister had preeclampsia on both pregnancies. This is my first, and since my blood pressure is a bit high my doctor also suggested daily baby aspirin. Hopefully this helps and I won’t have the same experience my sister had!
  • I also had preeclampsia in my first pregnancy and found it highly unpleasant.  It required me to be induced which took a loooooooong time at 36w5d.  It also required me to get iv meds and get my blood pressure checked every 15 minutes so it felt like I got zero sleep until my son was actually born two days later.  So if your dr is giving you a tip to avoid preeclampsia, it’s probably a good idea!!!!!  Also I had no idea I had it until I went to a dr appt and my blood pressure was like 165/110…no symptoms for me.  My dr said it’s common not to have any symptoms.  Hope you all have healthy pregnancies!!
  • I have white coat hypertension (which means I get nervous in the doctor’s office and my blood pressure reads higher than normal), and it’s my first pregnancy. So as a precaution, my OB strongly recommended that I take a low-dose aspirin (81 mg) starting Week 12 to lower my risk of preeclampsia. I have no other risk factors; I eat healthfully and do cardio 5x a week, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Maybe check in with your OB?
