Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old hearing

I’ve been noticing that my 4 month old has never startled to loud noises. He also doesn’t turn his head when we are talking. He is babbling and making lots of noises and he started rolling over and grabbing for things to put in his mouth. I’m just worried about his hearing. My dr said some babies who are used to a loud household may not startle to loud noises. (We are a very loud household. I have a 4 year old. Lol) He also passed his hearing test in the hospital. Anyone else have a baby that doesn’t startle?

Re: 4 month old hearing

  • I'd suggest trusting your mama gut and getting him tested. Most hearing loss occurs sometime after birth, so it's entirely possible that he was hearing in the hospital and not now. A bit of developmental info- at that age, even profoundly deaf babies babble, but even typically hearing babies might not turn to sound. So it could go either way. Children with hearing differences are pretty rare (1-5 out of every thousand babies), BUT identifying it early makes a lifetime of difference. There's no harm in getting him tested, aside from your insurance copay (usually whatever you'd pay for a specialist visit). You can ask your doctor for a referral- "I'm concerned that my baby isn't hearing well, I'd like a referral to an audiologist, please."

(I'm an early intervention teacher of the deaf, so babies and their hearing are what I do)

  • Thank you so much. I think to give me peace of mind I will have him see an audiologist.  He has an appointment with his doctor next week and I will talk to her about it.
