Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Apparel

  • What baby apparel will you stock up on? I saved almost all of DD's clothes and made a separate box for unisex clothing. I will definitely reuse our plain white Gerber onesies: they're great to layer under pajamas/sleep sacks when the room is cold. I have both the short sleeve and long sleeve versions.
Always go for zippered sleepers over snaps. ;) Much easier to handle while you're half asleep in the dark. If I can find more footed baby pants, I will buy a bunch of those! They're so much easier to deal with than baby socks that they will just kick off their feet.
Is there an amount you plan on getting? Not much if it's a girl, a lot if it's a boy. :p No matter what, I plan to get a cute going home outfit from the hospital.
Favorite types of baby apparel? I'm not sure if they make rompers for boys, but these were great when DD was tiny because they're so easy to put on and take off.
Favorite brands? I always find things I like at Children's Place. Cat & Jack has cute stuff too, but IIRC it runs a little long.

    Random tips...
    • You can take off a baby's onesie by pulling it down over their legs instead of up over their head. Makes dealing with blowouts a *little* less gross   ;)
    • Sizing can vary brand to brand, but most of them will tell you the general weight/length range on the tag. Newborn and 0-3 months are two different sizes: DD was an average-sized baby and wore newborn clothes for about a month. Then the 0-3 month stuff was like a bag on her  :D
    • Shop at secondhand sales and join local Facebook resale/buy nothing groups! Babies grow so fast that you'll find a lot of items that are still in good shape.
    • I never liked newborn hats because they slide off. Plus they probably won't need them being born during a warmer month.
    • You might not need a winter coat for your baby unless you plan to play with them in the snow. Just cover their body with a warm blanket in the car seat  :)

  • What baby apparel will you stock up on? We also have tons of hand me downs from the Big 3 so lots of gender-neutral stuff and some girly stuff from DD. The challenge is that my girls will be born in opposite seasons (DD is a January baby). That won't become an issue for a while though, so I'm not stressing about it.

Our most used clothing items in the newborn phase are zippered jammies (F snaps @hestia-is-wearie), especially the ones that have a two-way zipper, and dressing gowns that tie or have elastic at the bottom. When you're changing diapers every 23 seconds, the gown helps, esp motn. We also are big fans of the velcro swaddles.

Is there an amount you plan on getting? tons of hand me downs, but we'll buy some things just for this girlie. When buying for your first though, think about how often you do laundry, then multiply that by 2. So for instance, we do all of our laundry every Sunday. So if I were buying from scratch, I'd get 14-20 outfits (inclusive of jammies, which is basically all we wear during the day anyway) to account for blowouts. My kids are typically on the larger side of normal, although DD was pretty typical size. My boys have both been a solid size ahead of their age, so never really wore newborn sizes. DD was in nb for maybe 3 weeks? So don't go wild buying nb sizes (although they are totally scrumptious) and if you do, just keep tags on and don't wash everything until you know how big baby is!

Favorite types of baby apparel? two way zippered footless jammies are still my favorite things in the world. I like footless because they fit for SO long.

Favorite brands? We're Kyte lovers. Just so incredibly soft and lightweight. We also love Hanna Andersson for gender neutral jammies that I can pass down for all 4 kids. Kyte doesn't last through 4 kids in my experience. Also love Old Navy for daytime/play clothes. We shop a ton of consignment sales and get lots of hand me downs from friends, so clothes shopping isn't a high budget item for us! I do really splurge on HA and Kyte though - that's worth it for me to get brand new.
  • @hestia-is-wearie they do make boy rompers and I LOVE THEM! DH doesn’t but I don’t care 😂
  • What baby apparel will you stock up on? Like others have said, I have tons of hand me downs from DD, almost all of which were either second hand purchases from a local FB resale group or gifts. Provided this new one is a girl, we really won't need much, but I'll buy a new take home outfit anyways.

Favorite types of baby apparel? Diaper shirts and zippered footed jammies. I didn't mind the snap jammies that much, but to each their own. Diaper shirts as it keeps the babes from undoing their diapers once they get to that age of wanting to pull it off themselves.

Favorite brands? I second Kyte baby! I don't have any of their clothes, but their sleep sacs are the best hands down. I also absolutely love the brand zippy jams for sleepers as they have a zipper that runs between the legs, making night time changes warmer and easier for everyone. Best idea ever and worth the splurge to buy them.
  • I've never ordered anything from Copper Pearl, but I've heard great things about their baby swaddles and sleepers. I just found out they have an entire Sesame Street line! I am totally getting this kid a Super Grover bath towel <3

  • My advice for this topic is to get on your local Facebook Buy Nothing Group, because itty bitty baby clothes get used for such a short amount of time they can easily be passed on to more babies. I actually didn’t even sign up for my local but nothing group 😅, my friend who had her first the same time as me did and she ended up it’s so much baby clothes that she passed along everything she didn’t need to me, and I ended up with plenty.
  • Only rec I have are these
    Amazon.com: Gerber Baby Girls' 6-Pack Long-Sleeve Side-snap Mitten-Cuff Shirt : Baby

We used these with both boys for the first few weeks for easy skin to skin and then blankets on the legs, a lot of contact naps anyways. I think they helped since it wasn't a true onesie in the cord stump falling off quickly too.
