I'm so glad we have a friend that knows some basic electrical work! Lol. He helped DH take down to under cabinet lights that were HARDWIRED into the the outlet by the last owner 🙄 now I just need to set up the last couple LEDs in their spot.
Next up installing an outlet in our carport so I can hang our icicle lights outside without running a giant extension cord to the inside 😹
@stashattack electrical friends are the best! Our moved out to Colorado last spring though😕 fortunately he did take a look at the lights over our breakfast bar that we bought the house knowing they didn’t work and it turned out they just weren’t wired in all the way😅 maybe while he’s here next week he can put in an outlet under our sink so I can get a dishwasher😂
@stashattack@justyouraveragemama so crazy you’re talking about this! DH spent four hours last night in the basement mapping out the electrical wiring. Our house is nearly 100 years old and he’s finishing the basement, and has decided he can safely fix up some electrical things while he’s at it. So far he’s just mapping and not doing anything but I’m like…isn’t there someone you can ask for help? Someone who has a license or has done this many more times than you? Lol. I love that he’s taking on so much and is so determined to do a great job on DIY home improvement but I’m slightly nervous! We need an electrician friend too haha
@ccmrc143 the nice thing about electrical stuff is it’s mostly straightforward and easyish to learn. Just comes with a bit more risk is all lol. That being said, my SO gets real nervous and it took him an hour to change a light switch so he will not be doing DIY electrical, nervous people I feel are more likely to make a mistake lol
@ccmrc143 agreed with @justyouraveragemama. Like from what I understand it's not hard. DH can actually change a light switch/outlet. But like actual rewiring things he always asks our friend to come over to help with. He should find a friend, who maybe if he isn't license, has some experience! Wiring an entire basement is a huge undertaking LOL!
Our townhome was built in the 70s and the last owner did some really wonky things, especially in the actic/third floor conversion that DH and his friend spent weekends on rewiring! And even our second floor has some interesting quirks in terms of light switches.
My hubs can fix anything as long as its not electrical. Replacing a switch or outlet is his limit. It appears men that don't like electrical always find a friend that does somehow. His best friend drove 2 hrs each way to fix an issue we had a few weeks ago.
Did someone mention they were a disney travel planner? I can't remember if it was here or in a different thread. Cuzzzz If you are I may wanna pick your brain on how to do it cost effectively.
@stashattack meeeeeee! I'm actually down here right now even. Would love to help!
You guys and all your electrical friends. (Wait, dammit, phrasing...) Our house was built in the late 60s but there's a bunch of wonky stuff in it and we are...not handy people. Like at all. My husband is adding some floorboards to the attic so we can rearrange and convert our storage room to a guest room since this baby is going to have to sleep somewhere, and even that has been an undertaking. (To be fair that's also because the previous owners literally used packing peanuts for insulation so it's involved more than "I will put this board here" but still.)
Ughhhh I just ate a sandwich with aioli on it and didn’t remember that it’s not pregnancy safe till halfway through. Then I had a meltdown because I hate pregnancy dietary restrictions and it made me so sad.
@ccmrc143 you’re probably okay, plus unless it was fresh made in house, there are so many preservatives and additives that it’s no different than eating mayo
@justyouraveragemama that’s my concern as I think it could’ve been made fresh at the restaurant. I was so upset I didn’t ask after I ate it but may call tomorrow just to know for sure. I think I have to get sick for it to impact baby but don’t know for sure about that either. Nothing I can do now I guess.
@ccmrc143 I feel I struggle with this every day, remembering what foods are pregnancy safe and what foods are not. But yes, I do recall it's risk of illness so chances are that you are ok!
@ccmrc143 I remember last pregnancy for the first trimester I was furiously googling alllllll the time "xxxxxxxx safe during pregnancy". And then I got tired of it and started looking at actual numbers. I think aioli would be a salmonella risk, right? There are 1.35 million cases annually in the US, with a population of 332 million. So .4% of the population gets a case, many of which are so mild they don't experience symptoms or just get the runs for a couple hours. Beyond that, you'd have to not only get sick, it would have to be severe enough to cross the placenta, which is super rare for salmonella, so cut those odds down a lot -- the bigger concern is if you had an active infection while delivering. And then you consider the egg is from a restaurant making fresh aioli, which means they're more likely to take food storage and prep more seriously than Random College Guy who forgot the eggs on the counter overnight but "it's probably ok right", and the amount of aioli on your food is probably not a ton, so take volume into consideration as well. So yes it's a risk, but in the scheme of things, it's pretty minuscule -- frankly, driving to the restaurant probably poses more of one. Make your own decisions, of course, but unless you have some serious autoimmune issues, I wouldn't stress too much over it!
@ki1244 came to say this but you said it much better than I would’ve! The chances of getting food poisoning in the US is actually pretty low save for those random lettuce outbreaks which you’d think would get lettuce on the list of what not to eat. It’s all about context of where the food is coming from too. Deli meat from your local small sub shop is probably safer than a cold cut sandwich from the gas station. I’m sure beef sticks are somewhere on that list of what not to eat but I’ve been surviving off of them😅
@ki1244@justyouraveragemama you’re so right! Thank you for the reality check. I went searching for my copy of Expecting Better last night but remembered I lent it to a friend. Now I feel bad that I let the whole situation put me in a bad mood last night. Oh well. I’ll be more careful next time but I’ve never gotten sick from this before I’m sure it won’t happen this time. I also read a great reminder that at 5 weeks some women don’t even know they’re pregnant and are drinking and smoking and eating raw seafood etc. I tend to take guidelines as strict rules that if broken, all hell will break loose!! Hah
I gave up on worrying about food when I had my first. Morning sickness was so bad I got to the point I ate whatever I could keep down. The final straw was the listeria in the ice cream everyone freaked out on the forums. I figured if ice cream was not safe then the weekly turkey sandwich was better then no food. As long as you trust the restaurant in general and they have a good health record you should be fine. I became more obsessed with checking restaurants safety rates in general.
@colsen4 seriously -- tell my pregnant self I can't have ice cream and I will laugh you out of the room. @justyouraveragemama still waiting for someone to tell me to not eat celery or lettuce while pregnant. Both have far higher rates of listeria outbreaks. I tend to think it's more about telling us what to do than about actual reality. @ccmrc143 and even then, in a lot of the world (including first world countries) they call things like raw fish "food".
I basically live in the world of avoiding the high mercury stuff and binge drinking, but otherwise just let common sense prevail (which is what my amazing wizard of an OB told me last pregnancy).
Building a PC with your spouse is the next level up from building ikea furniture together for testing your marriage. We are on day 2 😹 well I guess more like hour 8? Lol. It's been a journey.
Maybe this is a flame worthy confession but I ate whatever I wanted with my last pregnancy. I ate raw sushi, deli meat, medium rare steak, Poki bowls from restaurants in Hawaii I had no clue about aside from what they had on their menu. I basically just ate what I wanted. 🤷🏻♀️ Nothing ever happened and he is perfectly healthy. Honestly I hear more listeria cases from hummus than I do deli meat.
I will say, we were in Hawaii this last October and I ate a poki bowl and it made my stomach hurt and I felt off until the next morning. It scared me enough I didn’t eat anymore poki that trip and I don’t plan to eat it when we go back this February either.
