1st Trimester

Energy without adderall

I just found out I’m pregnant and had to discontinue my use of adderall. Currently have absolutely no energy at all. Any tips on ways to get my energy back naturally so I can get things done? Thanks!

Re: Energy without adderall

  • It might just take time. You have a couple of things going against you right now- first, the withdrawal from Adderall I would think is like people who suddenly stop drinking caffeine. It'll take some time for your body to readjust to regulating itself without a stimulant, even if you weren't pregnant. Second, you're in the first trimester, which comes with low energy/exhaustion for many (most?) women. So I would say at this point, just accept it and readjust your expectations of yourself. You might not be able to get things done, and that's ok. In my first trimester, I built in a couple of 15 minute breaks during the workday to nap in my car, then I napped when I got home. My husband cooked more than usual, and the other chores just got spread out or pushed back, and my usual hour-long daily workout went by the wayside to make time for a nap. So take naps, and feel free to pull the pregnancy card! Congrats!

  • I am 4 weeks 4 days and I am going through the same exact thing as you
  • Oh boy does it suck! I had to do the same when I was pregnant with my first but it is so much harder now that I’m a mom because I can’t just be lazy in bed all day ugh!
  • @00kim00 thank you for the advice! I’m just so used to go go going 24/7 I hate feeling like such a slug but you’re right, I need to be ok just relaxing! I am growing an entire human inside my body right now which can be exhausting lol

I am in the same boat! It’s been years since I’ve been unmedicated with my ADHD diagnosis. I’m putting new egg cartons in the freezer, and the house seems to be falling apart due to executive functioning issues. Having a tough time, feeling kind of back to that embarrassed “dumb feeling” self that I *thought* I was before I was diagnosed. It’s been tough.
  • Same! Stopped Vyvanse as soon as I suspected. Not cutting out caffeine completely (sticking to <200mg/day) and taking a B12 supplement with my prenatals in the morning. Gets me through until 4pm, then I need to take a 20-30m nap— literally can’t help it, my body just powers down and I have to nap no matter what. Have my second cup of coffee after and power through the rest of the day.
  • I had to stop my Concerta. See about Wellbutrin, it’s off label for ADHD. It’s not as strong but it gives me some energy and keeps me from leaving my laundry in the washer for days 🥴 it’s much safer in pregnancy too
  • It's definitely hard. But on top of being of a stimulant, first trimester exhaustion is so bad. I had gone off my meds a few months before my first pregnancy and still the first trimester exhaustion hit me hard. Caffeine helped a little, but your body is taking a lot of energy to carry this baby for 9 months. It's gonna take a lot out of yo. That's for sure. <3 It should get better soon.

  • Yeah, the first trimester can hit you so badly with exhaustion. It feels like I’m drugged up with Benadryl or something half the time. Sometimes I take a nap accidentally because I sat down and my body just stops working, like narcolepsy. 😂 I shouldn’t joke like that but it really does feel like that.
It should get better! Also you can have 200 mg of caffeine, which is a decent amount. Might help a touch.
  • hello fellow ADHD ladies. I’m 7w1d and got off my short release adderall as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Tbh I had been minimizing it once we started trying but I’m a full time grad student and need it for studying. Thankfully I have an already scheduled app with my psychiatrist cuz ya girl is STRUGGLING. somehow managed to pass all my classes but I bombed all of my written exams and had the hardest time studying and focusing and motivating myself. I’m trying to self medicate with exercise and caffeine but we’re not supposed to do too much of either of that. In high school my symptoms were the most manageable when I was running cross country so intense physical activity plus drinking coffee regularly and taking extended release!! Anyone have any tips on how to function?! I should also mention all the cooking cleaning and general chores have landed fully on my husband as I don’t seem to have the brain capacity to function as an adult human being. I miss my medication!!  Don’t get me wrong I’m over the moon and hubby keeps reminding me I wanted and prayed for this… but how the heck am I gonna function and do well in my program without kickstarting my brain with my medication?
