Maternity leave - new job

I am starting a new job on January 2nd - they don’t know I’m pregnant yet. I will only be working for 4 months before I go on leave! They offer 3months leave starting the first day you work. But I’m so nervous to tell them I’m pregnant and don’t know when is the right time? Do I wait 2 months to build some credibility and then tell them I am going on leave in 2 months? Or do I rip the band aid and tell them right away? Anyone have previous experience that is similar?

Re: Maternity leave - new job

  • This is a great post for the question thread! I would probably tell them right away though if it were me. I don’t think they can legally do anything ie fire you or treat you differently and this will afford them time to plan and be considerate of others.

  • I start a new job Jan 23, and I’m due May 23. A friend of mine whom works at the hospital as well said to tell my manger sooner than later in case they see it on Facebook. I’m nervous too but I sent an email this evening letting her know
  • I would tell them sooner rather than later. Correct, under Title VII and ADA you're covered for firing legally. However if you are looking to qualify for FMLA  (if the employer qualifies for it) you wouldn't have job protected leave while out on maternity leave. Different states have different leaves. FMLA is just federal.
