Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Monitors

  • Okay here's my FFFC - we don't use any baby monitor. At all. Our house is a ranch (big basement, but all bedrooms, kitchen, living, dining are on the same level) and not gigantic, so we can hear baby crying from any room. I just don't go to the basement for long stretches when baby is tiny and asleep. We had a video monitor with our oldest and I found myself completely glued to it, zooming in to watch him breathe all night. Literally. All. Night. It wasn't helpful to my anxiety at all, so we ditched the monitor completely with the other two.

  • @BourbonBiscuits Fair enough! I totally understand watching the monitor like a hawk to make sure they're still breathing. It was a tough habit for us to break, especially DH.

We use this video monitor from Motorola. At first I was against the idea of video monitors (who wants to have a camera on them all night?), but in my opinion it gives you more peace of mind to see that they're sleeping/breathing instead of listening to silence and wondering if they're just lying there. I did not want a monitor that connected to wifi for security purposes. Our house is about 2000 sqft and DD sleeps in a corner room, and we only get spotty signal if we are outside doing yardwork on the other side of the house. The battery life is about four hours (I think), so we leave it plugged in all night, but if we forget to plug it in, it will beep VERY loudly and wake us up. Overall we like it and we'll be using it for this baby! Once they're born we'll probably switch to a Hatch light for DD.
  • We did a video monitor, this one was ok. The range on the cheap one we got for travelling is better though. Amazon.com: Motorola Baby Monitor - VM50G Video Baby Monitor with Camera, 1000ft Range 2.4 GHz Wireless 5" Screen, Two-Way Audio, Remote Pan, Tilt, Zoom, Room Temperature Sensor, Lullabies, Night Vision : Baby

We got a new one with DS2 because DS1 was in his own room in a big boy bed at 2, so we wanted eyes on both. Which is there are any FTM who want more than one I suggest thinking about a dual screen one if you are looking to have kiddos close together. Luckily MIL gifted this to us but wish I would've had the foresight to think ahead. Amazon.com: [Upgraded] VTech VM5463-2 Video Baby Monitor 5" LCD with 2 Cameras, Battery 12 Hrs. Video Mode, Pan Tilt Zoom, Color Night Light, Glow On The Ceiling Projection, Sound Activated Features, Two-Way Talk : Baby

@hestia-is-wearie BTW how are you able to change HTML title to avoid long URLs? Can't figure out how to in TB

We have a video monitor, no wi fi. My husband still turns it on every night for our six year old- mostly to hear his white noise 😂 I’ve told him it would probably be easier to just buy a white noise machine for our room, lol. I want a new one for new baby though bc ours is old and the battery doesn’t charge, so it beeps loudly about 2 min after unplugging it.

  • We had Motorola dual camera the screen broke after letting my sister in law use it. Went through 3 babies! This time around we got the owlet camera, 2 reasons it was a good black Friday deal and because we loved the sock monitor. My husband is very tech savvy so we have very secure Wi-Fi, it’s very scary having a baby monitored hooked to Wi-Fi for hackers.
  • We have a vtech monitor that is mounted in DD's room which is decent, but I absolutely hate the very loud beeping when you forget to plug it in or if it looses connection with the camera. It is supposed to be able to connect to both the base station and via wifi with an app, but we found the wifi connection was very glitchy and caused a ton of those camera disconnection loud beeps in the middle of the night, so we disconnected the wifi side of things and just use the regular monitor. I'm honestly not going to reccomend the one we have, so I won't give the link to it.

We also have the owlet camera and sock, mainly also bought the combo as it was on sale and cheaper than just the sock alone. The small camera is awesome for travelling, and that's basically the only time we've used it. The sock is my favorite piece of baby equipment we own... Such a huge piece of mind to know your kiddo is fine, especially that first time they sleep through the night.

One thing about mounting your cameras.... Be careful where your wires are! Didn't happen to me, but I know another mom who had her monitor mounted above the crib, with the wires secured on the wall behind those stick on wire covers (owlet camera comes with them). Her baby was able to reach the covers from her crib, pulled the cover off the wall, pulled a bunch of the wiring into the crib and was tangled up in it when mom came in to get her from her nap. She was fine, but so scary what could have happened! Lesson to keep those wires well away from reaching distance of the crib, even if you think they're safe behind the provided safety covers.
