1st Trimester

Nervous about work trip booked before I knew I was pregnant…pls help!

This is my first pregnancy, so I am paranoid about basically everything. I booked a four day work trip way before I knew I would be pregnant (this was all a very happy surprise). I will be probably 7-8 weeks when the trip happens.

I haven’t had my first prenatal appointment, so I don’t know anything about the state of this pregnancy. I am 23 and have no health issues so hopefully all is well, but I am really nervous about something happening while I’m away and being with my co-workers or not being able to get care. Would you go or should I cancel? The flights about 3.5 hours so nothing crazy. I’m just getting more nervous the more I think about it.

Also don’t really want to tell my boss I am pregnant yet, but need a good reason to cancel 2 weeks before the trip!

  • That's tough! They say short plane rides are usually safe during pregnancy. The only thing I'd be worried about is being able to hide possible nausea. For me, my nausea was pretty strong at 7/8 weeks, but everyone is different. With my first pregnancy, I ended up having to tell one of my bosses in the first trimester, and it was fine, but I understand wanting to wait. Good luck!

  • I understand the anxiety, but you will be totally fine. Where you are going there are likely doctors or ER’s in case of an emergency. Many people travel well into their pregnancies. Unless you suddenly develop debilitating nausea, which would likely lead you to tell your boss early anyway or take a medical leave, there’s no reason you can’t go.

  • Perhaps she is concerned based on where in the US she may be at the time. There are states where you can’t necessarily access the care you may need in an emergency if you catch my drift…

OP, travel is fine in general if you have no concerning signs. I too would be concerned about nausea but this may or may not be an issue. If you are in a remote area or one of these areas where you don’t have full access to women’s health care if something goes wrong, then I can’t blame you for rethinking it.
  • @Wishilivedinflorida very fair point. I didn’t think of that.

It’s crazy to have to consider. No out of state travel for me until I’m well past viability (currently 18 weeks). I wanted to visit a friend in Florida and it will need to wait or not happen at all. 😢
  • I think this is a very personal decision- but I was in a similar situation. I had to fly to San Francisco for work (prior to having had any doctors appts or ultrasound) and I decided to tell my boss, even though it was very early in the pregnancy. She was very supportive and I ended up doing the trip- it was comforting to have someone there who knew my situation.
I also have work travel planned to Seattle in January and I plan to take that trip.
I think the posters above brought up a valid point if you are traveling to a state where you may not be able to receive the full spectrum of care you may need, but I wouldn’t personally stop the work trip just because of a flight or colleague concerns. If it makes you feel better, I also have personal trips to D.C. and Hawaii planned while pregnant, and I plan to take those trips still.
Hope you have a trusting relationship with your boss where you would feel comfortable to disclose, if needed!
  • I traveled at 6-7 weeks and it was absolutely fine. I had the chance to meet a doctor before my trip and they also said they had no concerns. Make sure you drink fluids so you don’t get dehydrated, and get rest when you can! Hopefully everything goes great and you don’t feel too nauseous by that point.
  • I fly this Sunday! And I'm 7 weeks so I understand your anxiety. I plan to pack snacks that are comforting to my nausea, wearing loose clothing, taking a water bottle to refill and stay hydrated. I'm also packing grocery bags in case I get sick and don't have time to get to the bathroom! We got this <3
  • I just realized that if this cycle is going the way I think it's going... I'm going to be traveling at 6.5-7 weeks for visiting family for Christmas. Which is great. I has pretty nauseous last time around and wasn't eating a whole lot. So once I tell my husband, we will have to discuss whether we let the cat out of the bag. Traveling while pregnant can be a struggle. But it's totally doable <3
