Re: Product Spotlight: Hospital Bag (week of November 14, 22)

  • Off the top of my head, this is this list of items that I brought and definitely needed

Tablet and charger (it can be a while, and then bring in the hospital for a few days, so streaming shows helped)
    Portable speaker (music also helped)
    Phone charger
High waisted leggings (they hold everything together a little bit after birth)
    Shower stuff/toiletries
    Robe
    Flipflops for showering
Shoes that slip on for walking the halls before and after birth
    Swaddles
Baby going home outfit plus a couple of others
    Warm socks
    Nursing tanks and tops
    Boppy (or other nursing pillow)
    Snacks

  • I overpacked for my son that’s for sure so this time I am planning to not stay too long post delivery and will be brining far less stuff

what’s on my MUST HAVE list though is

    1. my own labour and deliver gown, the hospital grade one made me SO ITCHY so I was arse naked most of the labour lol

    2. my slides! Because they are Uber comfy for sore feet AND can be used in the shower. I brought flip flops last time and my feet were so sore lol

3.Gatorade/ vitamin water to hydrate and get some sugar in me to complete the marathon of labour

    4. phone charger and small speaker, having music really helped me get through the contractions!

    5. Always discrete postpartum underwear AKA a diaper lol much nicer than the mesh undies for me  and earth mama perineal spray + home made padsicles! This was a game changer for relief down there lol

    6. I’ll be investing in Bao Bei postpartum leggings again, they are pricey but we’re a god sent the first few weeks post partum to hold everything together lol

    7. swim short and flip flops for my husband, the room was SUPER hot last time and I was in the shower most of my labour so DH was just hot and sweaty lol

    8. for baby I’ll be brining so pre harvested colostrum, just in case she needs a top up, as well as diaper/ wipes and 1 going home outfit. I brought a bunch for my son and ended up basically just doing skin to skin to whole time anyway lol

I live literally 5min away from our hospital, so if I need anything else it’s not too hard to get anything lol but I don’t want to stay post partum so long as it’s an uncomplicated delivery and  my midwife will come to the house to do a routine check up :)
  • @thankfullyamama you didn't like the mesh undies?! I took as many home from the hospital as I could to wear the first week postpartum 😂.
Also, did your hospital not have diapers for your stay?

In a week or two we should start a postpartum must have thread!
  • @willrunforcookies the mesh undies were awful lmao 🤣 I’m very sensitive to how things feel on my body too and I only ever wear seamless underwear so things with seams are SUPER irritating lol but the always discrete felt like high waisted seamless undies, kept me dry AND held my padsicles in place haha and NO in Ontario the hospital doesn’t supply you with anything really lol!

I think a post partum thread would be GREAT! I definitely didn’t prepare enough last time lol
  • I agree @klamsb5 I usually try to limit what I bring to the hospital for the same reason. At least here in the US, they have most things you absolutely need (diapers, pads, padsicles, meds, undies). They even gave us swaddle blankets and a Halo wrap to bring home!

Otherwise just toiletries, nursing clothes, comfy pants, slippers, chargers, going home outfit.

It will be January, aka frigid, here. Is anybody bringing like a snowsuit or bunting for their babe?
  • @jennifer_louise my first was a winter baby too, so I have a NB sized fleece bunting that's not too thick for the car seat that we'll use for going home.
  • Just wanted to chime in and say thanks all for the personal experience insight! It’s all very helpful!!
  • @jennifer_louise we'll probably bring a warm take-home outfit that still works for the car seat, and then have one of those fleece-lined car seat covers. We still have our cover from DD, who was a summer baby but had a tough transition (along with all of us) into the brutally cold/windy IL winters...!
  • @jennifer_louise  Like a couple of others, we'll plan on a heavier sleeper and then a carseat cover to take ours home in.  Our drive home is an hour-ish so I actually worry about him getting too warm in the car so I'd rather dress him for that and just cover the seat up while we're outside.  We haven't got a carseat cover yet but it's on my list to get soon.

I'll likely be having another csection so my stay will be a little longer but I still plan to take as little as possible.  Just the necessities and, if I find there's something I need that I don't have, my husband can bring it from home the next day or run out to buy it.  I was curious about a BFing pillow which I see some ppl are taking so I think I'll add that this time.  I didn't think to take it with my first.  I also might take my own bed pillow.
  • In most cases, a "birth room bag" is only a generic concept, because maternity hospitals require you to put things in bags with the owner's name on them. It can also be a transparent bag made of thick film.
    You need to take:
A charger for your cell phone, a nursing bra. It is desirable to have a pair to change and disposable liners, Panties, Hygienic pads. And you can have special ones for postpartum secretions.
    Also baby clothes.
Although everything is individual and depends on the place where you will give birth.
