Re: Product Spotlight: Rocking Chairs

  • Ttm:
    • Favorite glider/rocking chair:  we have one that's old (hand me down), it worked for my first, but I didn't use it for my second.  I don't love it.  Haven't tested out any to have have a favorite.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost: free
    • What you like about it:  it was free and takes up very little space
    • What you don't like about it, if anything:  it leans way too far back, it doesn't guide very smoothly
    • Is there a glider/rocking chair you don't have but are considering? Why?:  if I could have my dream chair, it would be a glider and recliner in one, because at least I would be able to sleep comfortably in the nursery.
    • Additional thoughts on glider/rocking chair?:

  • STM but I’m a FTM on this subject. I never had one with my son. They do seem handy though and now that we have more space, I might get one.

Haven’t looked into anything and I don’t know where to start, so I’d appreciate any insight here! Especially interested in one that doesn’t have a large footprint and doesn’t break the bank.

  • For S+TMs:

    • Favorite glider/rocking chair: I have the Davinci recliner and swivel glider. Can't say I have a favorite bc it's the only one I've used/tried 🤷‍♀️
    • Link/picture: https://www.target.com/p/carter-39-s-by-davinci-arlo-recliner-and-swivel-glider-cream-linen/-/A-79262611
    • Cost: It was a gift from my grandmother but it was $380....crazy that the price is now $600 only 1.5 years later 😱😱
    • What you like about it: It rocks/glides, swivels, and reclines! So basically it does all the things. It's comfortable---DH and I have both spend many nights sleeping in this chair 😆
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: It can be a little hard/loud to close the recliner. Also I got the cream color, which looks really good in the nursery but a light color is definitely not practical 🤣 even though the dog/cat aren't ever in the nursery (so they aren't on or near the chair) and I never wear my dirty farm clothes in there....that chair needs a good cleaning. You will inevitably spill milk or formula on your chair, and don't forget about spit up. Luckily the fabric wipes up easily but you can see dirt for sure.
    • Is there a glider/rocking chair you don't have but are considering? Why?: When I was shopping for a chair, I really like a couple from Pottery Barn but the shipping timeline was insane at the time (like 6+months backordered) so I ended up with this chair. In hindsight I don't think there would have been much a difference, other than price. Also I'm looking at getting just a simple, small rocking chair for the living room, since I won't always be able to nurse baby in the nursery while my toddler is running around 🙃 will look on FB marketplace and local groups for a cheap/free one.
    • Additional thoughts on glider/rocking chair?: I wasn't able to test out chairs in person bc there are no stores near me and also it was peak covid times. If you can test out chairs in person, do it! If not, I relied heavily on reviews (especially ones that noted the person's height/size). You may also need to take into account your husbands size, if there is a large size difference between the two of you. Although you will most likely be using the chair more, don't count out that your SO will probably be using the chair too. My husband would give our son a bottle while I pumped and took many shifts rocking him to sleep

    For S+TMs:

    • Favorite glider/rocking chair: I only have one (Dutailier) so I can’t say it’s a favorite per se without anything yo compare against, but it is comfortable and I like it!
    • Link/picture: Mine is similar to this, although an older version, and it does not lock: Dutailier Adele 2526 Glider Multiposition-Lock Recline with Ottoman https://a.co/d/b7Y5zmG
    • Cost: I purchased mine used off FB marketplace back in 2018
    • What you like about it: it is very comfortable, has an ottoman, has a few side pockets where I would store snacks in the early days when nursing seemed to take all day
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: N/A
    • Is there a glider/rocking chair you don't have but are considering? Why?: N/A
    • Additional thoughts on glider/rocking chair?: Ditto the advice to test out several, if you can. Perhaps check out a baby store or baby section of a store and sit in as many as possible before making a decision to make sure you’re comfortable.
    • Also, have a plan for what to do with it / where it will go when your baby is a toddler and the room needs toddler proofing (rockers/gliders should be removed before converting to a toddler bed or crib mattress on the floor if too young for a toddler bed and baby attempts to climb out of the crib).

  • Need some advice: should I go for a rocker or a glider? I went to La-Z-Boy gallery today since I'm not "sold" on a traditional, single-purpose nursing chair; would prefer to buy something that can transition to living room after it's done with the nursery. Oh, and I absolutely want a reclining options so... yeah. HALP!

  • @acleverusername I say if you have the space, definitely go for one that had a recline option!  I wish I had that option when I was sleeping on the glider in the nursery with my daughter!  As for rocker vs glider, I think that's personal preference.  The glider is easier for me to propel than my sister's rocker, especially when I'm trying to keep myself in position for nursing.
  • @acleverusername agree with @scaredunprepared that I find gliders easier than rockers, I’m looking at gliders exclusively. Also jealous of the recliner option, our nursery is the size of a postage stamp so that’s not an option for me! Sounds amazing, definitely get one like that if you can.

  • @etnyah @scaredunprepared so it sounds like ability to easily rock or glide is what I should be looking for? Not necessarily the difference in movement offered?

  • @acleverusername I think so, yeah. I just think rockers are kind of annoying, you have to make a little more effort which is hard when you’re trying to get a little baby to latch. Some people find them easier though, I’d go try some out in person if you can!

  • @acleverusername I think so too!  But definitely personal preference.
  • @etnyah Yep; decided to drive to the nearest stores and see what they have to offer. Sigh. This is way more complex than anything else I've got to buy! Haha.
