Re: Product Spotlight: Bottles and Accessories

    • What kinds of bottles/nipples have worked best for you in the past? Philips Avent bottles were what my son liked best and I liked that they don’t have a million parts to clean.
    • Best bottle cleaning products? We have a Boon lawn that we still use for drying other toddler things-plates, utensils, teethers, water bottles, medicine syringes, humidifier parts…I love that thing! We have a bottle warmer/sterilizer that we mainly used for sterilizing. I forget the brand and I can’t really look because my brother is borrowing it for his kiddo right now.
    • Best bottle feeding-related travel products? Dr. Browns travel formula dispenser. We used that a lot for plane travel and even for night feedings at home since my son didn’t care if his formula was room temp/cold.
We’re going to try breastfeeding this go around. My son was born right before the pandemic and I wasn’t able to get any breastfeeding support and I ended up with the pretty bad PPA and bottle feeding my son helped with that, as well as medication. I would still like my husband to be able to feed our son. Any recommendations for bottles that breastfeeding babies like would be fantastic!

  • Oh boy, I don’t remember. I exclusively breastfed but pumped at work, we just grabbed some random bottles and my son wasn’t picky. I’ll see what I can dig out in storage! Mostly I’m excited about having a dishwasher this time around since we didn’t in the apartment we lived in at the time.

The one thing I know differs from formula and breastfeeding babies is that bf babies stick to the same bottle nipple size forever, with formula you increase the size, right? So that’s practical at least. My only tip would be to get used to pumping pretty early on and try a bottle now and then from the get-go, if you introduce it later (say, when you go back to work) it can be a lot harder to get baby to accept the bottle.

@iiirene I have a few friends who formula fed the first time and had a much easier time breastfeeding the second time! Crossing my fingers that’ll work out for you too. Breastfeeding support is invaluable.

Before answering the official questions, I highly recommend having one of ALL the bottles to see which one your kiddo will take. Also, taking a bottle is literally a skill so to anyone who breastfeeds, please please learn from my mistake and make sure you give at least a small (even 2 Oz “snack”) bottle per day to keep up with the bottle skills.

The last thing you want is to panic a week before you go back to work (if you work away from your baby) and realize the baby is a bottle refuser. It was honestly one of the top three most stressful situations in my life and it took working with a skilled IBCLC and daily mouth exercises 5x per day for DD to take a bottle again at 5 months old and avoid reverse cycling.

    • What kinds of bottles/nipples have worked best for you in the past? DD would only take MAM bottles after a long and stressful period of bottle refusal.
    • Best bottle cleaning products? Dawn dish soap, water, and the long brushes for cleaning (or the dishwasher) with a boons grass rack for drying.
    • Best bottle feeding-related travel products? I would sometimes take a yeti of boiling water if we needed to warm a bottle on the go, but I was breastfeeding so it was a rarity and more for DH.
    • Any bottle feeding-related accessories you liked? Can’t think of anything!

    • What kinds of bottles/nipples have worked best for you in the past? My son had reflux and spit up ALOT so Dr. Brown's and MAM worked the best for us. Unfortunately that meant lots of parts to wash 😆. We used size 1 nipples on them the entire time as I was also breastfeeding
    • Best bottle cleaning products? I bought a couple small bins (that fit in 1 side of my sink) from the dollar store and would put dirty bottles and pump parts in there. I always had a designated wash cloth and bottle brush used ONLY for baby stuff. Dawn dish soap works great, I also sometimes used the Dapple bottle soap (it worked a little bit better at getting milk residue off of bottles). I also used a bottle drying rack (I believe it is Munchkin brand). I was afraid the grass looking ones would harbor mold so I steered clear of that
    • Best bottle feeding-related travel products? When I needed to warm bottles on the go, I would just bring a Yeti with hot water and then drop the bottle in there when it was time to warm it. If I was at a restaurant or something I would sometimes just ask for a cup of hot water
    • Any bottle feeding-related accessories you liked? We had a bottle warmer that we sometimes used. Breastmilk can be left at room temp 4-6 hours (sources vary) so since we were triple feeding, I would sometimes just leave my freshly pumped milk on the counter for the next feed bc I knew it would be less than 4-6 hours. But honestly my son didn't seem to care too much about the temp of milk!
Tip: don't buy a set of multiple bottles of 1 brand right off the bat. Try a couple different kinds to see what your baby responds to best. Also there are lots of lists out there with the "best" bottles or nipple for breastfeeding babies---don't stress out too much about that. Sometimes your baby won't like the bottle that is supposed to be the best and that's ok 😊
  • Another tip I just remembered: lots of baby registry goodie bags come with a 4 oz bottle. I know at least Amazon and target both did. That’s how we found the right bottle for my son and ordered a bunch after that.
  • @iiirene oh yes you're right! That's how we got a MAM bottle which ended up being a favorite!
  • Oh yeah, speaking of free samples, grab all the free formula samples you can get! Even if you’re exclusively bf-ing, it’s good to have on hand in case you need it.
