Hi Mamas, i am 31 weeks currently. My OB just informed me that i have gestational diabetes which i was shocked to hear. My fasting blood sugar level was only 2 points higher than 90 and my other 2 levels (1 hour and 2 hours after the sugary drink) were normal. He had me start finger pricking 4 times a day. So far i have done it twice (todays the first day) and my fasting level was 91 (should be below 90) and 1 hour after my breakfast was 122 (should be below 120). I feel like I’m on the cusp but regardless he says i have it. Anyone else have this and have any yummy meal suggestions lol
Re: Gestational Diabetes
I did a lot of charcuterie with meats. Frozen yogurt, especially the ones with extra protein are a great ice cream replacement. I ended up needing to split up my breakfast as it would spike me if I had coffee and food at the same time. Ultimately my GD baby was nearly 2lbs smaller than the baby I had when I was borderline under the GD diagnosis because I was monitoring and controlling it.
Some carb snacks I've been doing between meals are a chopped banana (or apple) with plain Greek yogurt and walnuts or with peanut butter (apples and bananas are about 30 carbs each so that works out).
The carb-free snack I've really been leaning on is caprese salad or Greek salad (tomato, cucumber, red onion, mozzarella or feta, with EVOO, pepper, and either lemon juice or balsamic vinegar).
Some tips: pairing carbs with protein and fat will slow the release of the sugars into your blood. White/processed carbs have been awful for my sugar levels even if I stay within the carb limits for the meal, so I'd suggest trying to stay away from them. I've found that walking, even for just a few minutes (anywhere between 5-30) after eating really helps keep my blood sugar in check.
I was also just over the regular limits of sugars with the glucose test, but they told me that as hormones increase it usually gets worse and they were right.
Best of luck!
any other mamas with tips on this please comment!
