Measurements at ultrasound

Hi everyone,

My baby's due date is January 24.
All measurements look really good and healthy, but there's always one measurement which is way smaller than the other ones. Baby is 60th percentile in all measurements except the BPD (biparietal diameter). In BPD baby is 10th percentile. I can't seem to find any info about this online but it makes me worried. Anyone else have this experience or heard of this? I'd love some input.

Thanks!

Re: Measurements at ultrasound

  • I don't know about that measurement specifically, but with most of my measurements this pregnancy (including things related to a fetal heart abnormality--so closely tracking), they've told me that they don't start to worry until a measurement is below the 3rd percentile (or I guess above the 97th if the problem is in the other direction). Others may have more specific info though!

  • So I'll start by saying measurements can be off in ultrasound - the baby is still pretty small at this point, so the matter of a few millimeters this way or that could drastically change the percentile.  So I'd ask your medical provider what, if anything that may mean and if it means you/your pediatrician should be looking for anything specific after the baby is born.  They will probably say no.
That being said, it's soooo easy to read into these measurements and freak out about them (I'm doing that myself after yesterday's ultrasound). As my husband pointed out, the baby is still growing, and Percentiles for any given body part could be ahead or behind if the baby had a growth spurt in a particular place and not another.
  • Thank you for that reminder too. I see my doctor on Friday so hopefully I can get some clarity and feel better about all of this!
