Re: Product Spotlight: Sleep Surfaces

  • Lifestyle(House, Apartment, Travel a lot)? Split-level house, with regular travel to grandparents' houses (both sets live relatively close).
What sleeping surface(s) do you have? We have a Delta Children 4-in-1 convertible crib, plus a bassinet and a folding travel bassinet that I forgot the brand names of.
Link/Picture? Delta Children Emerson 4-in-1 Convertible Crib
    Cost? $299
Pros/Cons? We had no issues setting up the crib, and it also has a matching dresser with a changing table top. When DD started to pull herself to a stand, we had to buy padded rail bumpers because she was chewing the wood finish off. If you use it for a toddler bed, you will need to buy the toddler bed rail separately from the Delta Children website. (We only used the toddler bed setup for a couple months before putting her in a twin bed.)
We got two bassinets at our baby shower and returned one...and regretted it. We live in a split-level, so a second bassinet would have come in handy instead of bringing the one back upstairs and downstairs every day. Definitely get extra bassinet sheets for the early days: you never know how much your baby will spit up or have blowouts.
Even if you don't travel, I highly recommend a travel bassinet for visiting places! We used it all the time when we visited my parents' house because we didn't want to put DD on the floor or in an adult bed. We have something similar to this

  • Lifestyle(House, Apartment, Travel a lot)? House (but not a big house - ranch-style with a basement), we don't travel too often, but when we do there's always a crib available
What sleeping surface(s) do you have? Pack n play and a regular crib (which I think is convertible into a toddler bed, but we've always just switched straight into a twin)

The crib is super old from Target
Cost? Not crazy expensive - pnp is $160
Pros/Cons? We didn't do any of the gadgets (like the SNOO or whatever) to aid in sleep. My kids have not all been great sleepers (DS1 didn't sleep through the night fully until he was 2.5 DD slept through the night at like 10 months, DS2 still doesn't sleep through the night at 14 months) but I don't think the SNOO would have helped. Sometimes babies just aren't great sleepers! But you settle into a routine and you learn to cope and then one day you wake up and they've been asleep since you laid them down! We keep baby in our room for the first 4-6 weeks, transitioning them to the nursery a few weeks before I go back to work. That's when life really begins.
  • For STMs:
Lifestyle(House, Apartment, Travel a lot)? We live in a house and do not travel a ton, just the occasional trip here an there.
What sleeping surface(s) do you have? At home for months 0-4 we use the halo bassinet. We then transition directly to a regular crib. When traveling, we use a pack and play. The one that we have has a bassinet insert so if we travelled with a newborn (0-4months) we would likely use that (but I have never been brave enough I will admit!).

Cost? Both items were around 200 I believe
Pros/Cons? I am not here to pass judgement as each mom does what she thinks is best but cosleeping gives me anxiety so I think the pro is that these items align with my sleep goals of not doing that. The halo is on the smaller side, I can sleep right next to babe and its easy to clean. The pack and play is super portable obviously. Im not sure that I have many cons to list, I am pretty happy with my choices!
  • @maelove totally agree on co-sleeping. We did a few times with our oldest and it gave me such terrible anxiety. Our middle has slept with us a few times (but she's 3.5 - she didn't at all before she turned 2.5) and the youngest (14 mo) never has. I *think* there's a safe way to do it, but it's just not something my anxiety will allow
  • Lifestyle(House, Apartment, Travel a lot)? I own a house now,  but before last Christmas, I think we'd have moved, 10 times since my first was born. And before this house it was apartments, other families homes, and a camper, and a rental home in Texas.
What sleeping surface(s) do you have? For My first we used a Dream On Me Bassinet in pink with the under storage and wheels, the hospital scared us to death with sids so I had felt like I need my baby to sleep in the damn bassinet lmao, which had worked until we moved into one family members home and this woman was not fond of babies, so I had just started co sleeping since DD was about 7 or so months I felt like, ok atleast she wasn't BRAND new I think she'll be ok. Then it was just that until she got her own bed and started sleeping in it at about 3.
My second one has co slept since day 1 because I couldn't handle one baby trying to sleep and constantly caring for a new baby all night since when my second was born we loved in like an efficiency in FL so it was hard enough for everyone to sleep all at once.
Link/Picture? I'm not sure if was a gift
Cost? 90 bucks about 4 years ago.  Not sure about now
Pros/Cons?  I highly recommend the dream on my bassinet just because it was really so so simple to put together, wash, and has plenty of space for a baby imo. I could even hang a minnie mouse toy on the hood of it and it kept her entertained once she hit like 4 months, we had loved in an all flat apartment while it was in use and I loved how small it was to maneuver through doorways and around the apartment. Just a really convenient bassinet!!
