Lifestyle (house, apartment, travel often, etc): house
What you used: We used a bedside bassinet that had wheels for the first few months, then moved my son into his own room around 5 months
Link/picture: Mika Micky Baby Bassinet Bedside Sleeper Bedside Crib Easy Folding Portable Crib All mesh 2022 New,Grey https://a.co/d/cDN3tHK
Cost: the bassinet was $150 when we got it, I don’t remember the cost of the crib-my husbands grandfather bought it for us.
Likes/Dislikes: I liked that the bassinet could be collapsed down and had a carry bag for when we visited family. My son slept fine in it but we let my brother borrow it for my niece and she would not sleep in it. Our crib is a typical convertible crib. We took the front off of it a few months after he turned two.
Additional thoughts?: You don’t need a $300 breathable mattress. It’s no safer than a regular crib mattress. I’m a firm believer that that is a marketing ploy.
I do have a question for more seasoned moms-does anyone ever actually convert their crib to a full/queen? We’re trying to decide between buying our son a floor bed and using his crib for the baby or keeping what we’ve got for my son and buying a new crib for the baby.
Lifestyle (house, apartment, travel often, etc): We lived in an apartment when we had our son, a house now.
What you used: a hand me down mini crib in our room until he was six months old, regular sized crib in his own room at six months.
Link/picture: the mini crib I have no idea. His actual crib is from ikea.
Cost: free and uhhh… $99?
Likes/Dislikes: this time I’ll get a bedside bassinet. The mini crib wasn’t close enough. Although we had it, we actually ended up co-sleeping most of the time.
Additional thoughts?: co-sleeping is safe, despite what the internet and pediatrician tells you. When you look at SIDS risk, please take other countries into account. No country has as stringent safe sleep rules as the US, and the SIDS risk is higher here than most developed countries. The actual cause of SIDS is poverty and a country that doesn’t give a shit about its people. End rant, sleep however you feel is best.
@iiirene my son sleeps in a full sized bed now. We made the switch because he needs a parent to sleep with him every night, so we figured we’d make it comfortable for ourselves too. We made the switch about 6 months ago, not long after he turned 3. It’s been working really well! We’ll reuse his crib for new baby.

@iiirene we haven't transformed the crib to a full and probably won't because of space. Once our oldest was able to climb out of the crib we got a (free) toddler bed that she is still using. We used her old crib mattress for her with the toddler bed, and got a new mattress for our 2nd but used the old crib for him. (That didn't last long, see below for details lol)
Third time mom:
Lifestyle (house, apartment, travel often, etc): we live in a house and I travel often (2 hours) to stay weekends at my sister's house so the kids can see their cousins. We also do 2-3 family trips in the summer (4-10 days)
What you used: I feel like we have tried everything lol.
My first used the Halo Bassinest swivel sleeper with newborn insert until 6 weeks when we moved her into her own room in the crib, and she slept through the night from then on. We did find that she was a bougie little thing and required chenille sheets, or it just didn't work. No clue why, but that made a huge difference.
My second we wanted to try a pack n play for overnight sleep so he would be used to it for travel. He hated it. We eventually caved and rented the Snoo because I was getting maybe 3 hours of sleep a night and just couldn't function. The Snoo was a lifesaver. We got it out of desperation and I'm glad we did. He went from waking every 1.5 hours to every 3-4. Once he outgrew the Snoo we transitioned to the crib in the master and he slept for 3-4 hours at a time, but at 10 months I was over it and moved him to a pack n play in his own room. He is now sleeping through the night, and while I want him to eventually sleep in the crib, I don't want to ruin the good thing we have going so he might sleep in the pack n play forever 🤣
Link/picture: SNOO Smart Sleeper Baby Bassinet - Bedside Crib with Automatic Rocking Motions and Soothing White Noise - Ideal for Newborn Babies to 6 Months - Natural Sleep Training https://a.co/d/hvZS4OC
Cost: $1500 to buy, or about $150-250 a month to rent (I think we should have just bought it, especially since we could have used it for this baby!!!)
Likes/Dislikes: loved that it would rock him back to sleep if he got upset, and the integrated white noise was great.
Additional thoughts?: we are going to try a cheaper version this time, and if it doesn't work we are renting Snoo again. The bassinet we are going to go with initially is: Graco Sense2Snooze Bassinet with Cry Detection Technology | Baby Bassinet Detects and Responds to Baby's Cries to Help Soothe Back to Sleep, Ellison , 19 D x 26 W x 41 H Inch (Pack of 1) https://a.co/d/6prhHOz
For travel, we had to lug the Snoo around when he was still in it and that was HARD because that thing is HEAVY and takes up a ton of room. Once the kids were a bit older, we used pack n plays for travel and honestly they both do/did great in them.

What you used: We purchased the Halo Swivel bassinet (hated it) and returned it after 3 or 4 days. Because of the swivel it was constantly uneven and my son would roll which freaked me out. We ended up using the uppaBaby Bassinet that came with our stroller and that worked out perfectly for us. He only stayed in our room for about 2 weeks and we then moved him to his nursery. We ALL slept better after that. He bedroom has the Newton mattress and we have been really pleased with it!
Cost: Halo $250 (I think), uppababy bassinet (came with stroller package), Newton mattress $299
Likes/Dislikes: As I mentioned above, we had issues with keeping the Halo bassinet level. We LOVED using the uppababy Bassinet - so easy to take on the go if we went out, to grandparent's house, bring in other areas of our house, etc. We have really loved the Newton mattress too. We have had a few accidents and the cover has been so easy to clean. My son will be moving to a "big boy" room before baby arrives, so we will use the bassinet and mattress again for this child!
Additional thoughts?: Definitely think about your home and your daily life when trying to figure out what to use. If you want your baby to be in different rooms when sleeping/napping, the Halo may not be your best bet because it's HEAVY. There are quite a few bassinets out there that are more mobile!
Lifestyle (house, apartment, travel often, etc): House. Master bedroom, nursery, and main living spaces are all on one floor, additional bedrooms and living space downstairs but we never go down there 🙃 Travel to visit family on the East Coast but they all either have a crib or pack and play for us to use, or we rent one on babyquip
What you used: We have a wooden cradle that my FIL started making before he passed away (my husband's uncle and grandfather finished making it) and most of my nieces/nephews have slept in it. My son slept in that at first in his nursery from day 1 (it is huge and definitely wouldn't have fit in our bedroom), then we moved him to his crib. We have a Babyletto crib and the Emily mattress from My Green Mattress. We also have a Guava Lotus pack and play (rarely used with my son) that we will be using this time around using the bassinet option
Crib- $499, converts to toddler bed and then full size bed (conversion kit is $99)
Travel crib-$230, $130 for the bassinet conversion kit ($350 if you buy them together)
Likes/Dislikes: I love our crib and mattress, no complaints at all. I did a lot of research (especially on mattresses) to pick a crib that was Greenguard certified, and mattress that used organic wool rather than chemical flame retardants. I also like our travel crib, despite not getting much use out of it with my son--interested to see how I like the bassinet conversion!
Additional thoughts?: Ugh I am STRUGGLING with what to do for sleeping arrangements once the new baby comes. Baby will sleep in the bassinet in our bedroom at first...then the plan is to move baby into the same room as my toddler (bc all our other bedrooms are on a different floor of the house). My son will be 23 months old at the time...I can't imagine him being in a toddler bed by then but I'm not sure if I want to buy another crib. Any advice?!
Lifestyle (house, apartment, travel often, etc): Live in a house with a master bedroom and a nursery. Rarely travelled except overnights with close friends or family.
What you used: My daughter slept the best in a rock n play until she was 4 months old, which I know is recalled now due to safety issues and I have no clue what we will do now! That thing was great, I could take it anywhere. We then moved her to the cheapo Ikea convertible crib which she slept in until we got her a twin last year.
Link/picture: What do you all think of something like this? I'm thinking it was the snuggled up feeling of the rock n play that made my baby so happy to sleep, and am wondering if using something like this in a crib or bassinet might mimic that, plus it would be good for visiting family and friends on the floor or in a pack n play. https://www.amazon.com/Mamibaby-Portable-Breathable-Lounger-Co-Sleeping/dp/B07RXB7ZKP
@beaniebaking unfortunately I don't think that would be safe for actually sleeping. I have a snuggle me lounger (similar to what you posted) that I used with my son as a safe cozy spot to put him down--he had jaundice pretty bad so I would put him in that by the window to get some sun throughout the day. But I know that it is not to be used for sleeping, even when supervised. TBH I bet it's only a matter of time before the Snuggle Me lounger, Dockatot, etc are all recalled due to people using them for sleep 🤷♀️
Additional thoughts?: *Honestly, at first my child slept in a rock n play sleeper (before the massive recall due to infant deaths and before I learned about safe sleep). There have been several unsafe sleep surfaces mentioned in this thread. Sadly, many items sold in stores are not actually safe for sleep. I highly recommend joining and reading posts in the below FB group for anyone who wants to learn more about safe sleep.
