Placing baby on bed to sleep: what to buy

Hey bumpies,
My two month old refuses to sleep in her bassinet during the day. She is ok when we place her on our empty bed (we aren’t bed sharing and an awake adult is always watching her). Our pediatrician said the soft mattress surface isn’t good for her, but we could buy a pad or something to give her a firm surface.
Does anyone know what we could use? I don’t want a soft lounger since those aren’t any better than our mattress.

  • I'm not sure you can find a safe sleep surface to put on a bed. There's a great resource on Facebook that promotes evidence-based safe sleep, I'd suggest joining that and asking there (I think it's likely you'll get unsafe advice here). Here's the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/974538582631413

  • I think it’s probably better to try a crib. Is she okay with your bed because someone is right next to her? I wonder why she’s refusing the bassinet.
i don’t know what you could buy that would be safe. Anything raised would carry the risk of her rolling off if you or someone who’s watching her happened to doze off. Pediatricians are going to always err on the side of caution when it comes to safe sleep. I guess it depends on how soft your mattress is. Our bed wasn’t that squishy so I was fine with my son napping on it with nothing around him like big blankets . But I didn’t start actual bed-sharing until 6 months. But I was comfortable with the risk by then and followed all of the bed-sharing rules.
