GTKY 10/11: Where Are You?

Idea taken from the lovely @nopegoat in March 23 :)

-Where's everyone at? As specific or general as you are comfortable sharing of course.
-What brought you there?
-What's your favorite thing about where you live?
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live?

Re: GTKY 10/11: Where Are You?

  • -Where's everyone at? I live on the coast of Maine, 30-45 minutes north of Portland
-What brought you there? My husband is from a couple of towns over. We lived in Boston for a while but wanted to buy a house and have more kids, and that wasn't going to be possible there.
-What's your favorite thing about where you live? The weather. I love snow. And the summers are mostly comfortable.
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live? Spring is non-existent. I also miss having access to the kinds of flights you can get out of Boston.

  • Where's everyone at? As specific or general as you are comfortable sharing of course.
I am on the eastern shore of Maryland, 30 minutes from the beach.
-What brought you there? Uhhh my parents. Lol. I’ve been here since I was 4.
-What's your favorite thing about where you live?
we are so close to so many great day trip destinations: Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Virginia, all within 2-3 hours, plus Maryland has it all: beach, city, rural, mountains, you name it- we have it here.
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live?
Humidity in the summer. So oppressive.
  • -Where's everyone at? As specific or general as you are comfortable sharing of course.
    I live in Louisville, KY.

    -What brought you there?
I grew up here! After our first was born, we knew we needed to be closer to family so we moved back. MH is not from here, but his family kind of sucks soooo I won lol

-What's your favorite thing about where you live?
Louisville is not what you think of when you think of Kentucky. It's super progressive and liberal. Huge arts scene and great restaurants. Very LGBTQ+ friendly. Derby season is also ... totally unmatched. It's incredible.

-What's your least favorite thing about where you live?
It's a small big town - people tend to stay in certain circles for generations, so everyone knows everyone else's business. It can be hard to break into (socially) if you didn't grow up here.
  • @BourbonBiscuits Hey neighbor! I am over in Lexington. 🙂
  • -Where's everyone at? As specific or general as you are comfortable sharing of course.
    Cleveland, OH
    -What brought you there?
I was born and raised in a suburb east of Cleveland, but I went to college and met DH in a west side suburb, so now I'm a "west sider." Being an east sider or west sider is a very Cleveland question  :p
-What's your favorite thing about where you live?
There's so much more to Cleveland than meets the eye! We have a fantastic theatre district, fine arts organization, and several great hospital systems. There is a lot of rich culture here, great restaurants, forests, and beaches. We also never get natural disasters.
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live?
The winters can be pretty brutal: since we're positioned right under Lake Erie, we get several feet of "lake-effect snow" every winter. I've seen snow as late as May 11.
  • Hi mainer mama! I'm up north by caribou!
  • -Where's everyone at? Basically Canada Maine, about 25 minutes from Caribou
-What brought you there? We bought a house outright on Christmas last year, came from South Texas
-What's your favorite thing about where you live? The views, air, seasons!
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live? All the snow!! We must have had 15-17 inches last winter. And another least fav is how small my town is, everything semi interesting to do or to get to eat, is 45 minutes away lol
  • @abjm0325 @cait32 omg hi!! Also @cait32 100% agree about everyone needing to experience a "real" city. We lived in DC for 4 years and while it was so much fun without kids, we're so glad to be out of there.
  • megh061816 why did you move from South Texas to near Caribou? Were you familiar with the area?

  • @cait32 Hey there! I lived about an hour north of Indy for a number of years, so definitely familiar with your area too. I agree, having some kind of experience that takes you into a different culture/ area/people group for an extended period of time is so important. It can be a real challenge for folks in rural, disadvantaged areas to break out of that mold though.

-Where's everyone at? As specific or general as you are comfortable sharing of course. Colorado

-What brought you there? Born and raised. Lived in SoCal for 8 years but had to come come eventually.
-What's your favorite thing about where you live? The mountains! Skiing in the winter, camping in the summer.
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live? That everyone else has discovered our state. Soooo much traffic now.
  • Nope we're actually moving back because we don't like it here, we used to live in maine a few years ago, but i guess we've grown out of it in the time we've been gone 😂😂 absolutely texas has my heart forever. We moved here purely to own a house outright, 2200 sqft, 2 stories, yard space, a solid foundation for the time being.
  • Yeah I could never live up there and I like the snow. Way too remote and rural.

  • i am in the burbs in the Austin, TX area. we moved from LA in 2021 but we are originally from NYC. we moved here because we wanted more space and a better quality of life for our daughter which we have gotten in many ways. it has been a huge adjustment coming from coastal cities, but i am still loving the adventure of it all. my least favorite thing is the summer heat and the politics.
  • -Where's everyone at?
    I’m in San Diego!
    -What brought you there?
I grew up in SoCal, but had lived out of state/out of the country for 10 years while my husband worked on his medical schooling and training. We lived in Albuquerque, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Bethesda, and London. We just moved back to CA last year because my husband got a job here. We never want to leave again!
-What's your favorite thing about where you live?
I love the beach, sunny weather, proximity to so many fun activities, and the delicious food/produce.
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live?
Public transportation is basically nonexistent here. We pretty much have to get in a car to go anywhere.
  • @radioactivet I'll gladly switch states with you 😂
  • -Where's everyone at?
I’m in upstate NY, just outside of Albany
    -What brought you there?
Both DH and I grew up a few towns away and our families are still here.
-What's your favorite thing about where you live?
Being close to my family is the biggest reason we stay here but I love Fall in the Hudson Valley
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live?  For being a blue state, upstate NY is pretty red and the cost of living here is high
  • -Where's everyone at? NE Ohio
-What brought you there? I grew up the next town over. DH moved her for work. We want to leave Ohio eventually but who knows when that'll be.
-What's your favorite thing about where you live? The seasons. All of my family and most friends are local but none of DH's so a bonus and then not. His family is more helpful so it's hard to say I'm surrounded by family when we don't have a whole lot of help.
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live? Not being as local to DHs family. Both if his sisters have kids, are they're not local to one another, but it would be nice to have the cousins close. Also we live in an urban, blue city, but Ohio as a whole is a red state and there are some pockets that are wild.
  • Where's everyone at? Indiana
-What brought you there? I’m a professor, so I have to go where the jobs are; but also, we have lots of friend here since my husband and I both went to grad school here (Ball State, Purdue).
-What's your favorite thing about where you live? Proximity to friends and family (we’re Midwest people) 🌽
-What's your least favorite thing about where you live? It’s not the Pacific Northwest 😆
  • @acamomma18 Boiler Up! DH, his parents, sisters and almost all of his extended family went to Purdue!
