In the beginning when I have to carry a lot of stuff I just use an old backpack and carry diaper changing clutch. It holds a ton, easy to use with a baby carrier, lots of pockets, and cheap!!

Later on when I can downsize some of the stuff I move to a bag like this. Still has some pockets and holds a good bit, but not quite as big.

One thing I kept in mind is that I refused to keep more than one bag. There are definitely much cuter bags out there and while my husband would absolutely take a more feminine looking bag if needed, but I wanted him to be completely comfortable with it as well.

  • We got an Eddie Bauer one from Walmart cause ours broke and we needed one in a pinch. It has worked out fine, big enough but not huge.

For a while we had the typical backpack one you get on Amazon and it annoyed me to no end - the zipper was super annoying to do and always got stuck. I much prefer the one we have now.

    Amazon one:

If you have/plan to have more than one kid, a backpack is essential to keep your hands free. Also a lot of diaper bags come with change mats, but they are super bulky. If you can find one that’s not so big you’ll save a lot of space.

  • I agree that a backpack is a really great option. It's so helpful to have it on my back and have my hands free.

I went with the Ryla pack and I love it. The only downside is it's a little smaller which only became an issue when she started going to daycare and needing to send all the winter gear. I just switched a a regular underarmer backpack that my husband got from his work.

I was considering getting the Parker baby backpack for the second because it's bigger. But the ones we have will work fine until she goes to daycare and needs a bigger one.

What diaper bag do you have or have had? Oh my god, I went through *so* many bags with our first, on the hunt to find the bag. I started with a messenger style - never again. It was just not comfortable or easy. I quickly moved to backpacks, and then moved through several. I never quite landed on one I liked best, so I'm excited for this thread to see what folks have been using more recently!
What style is it? Definitely going for a backpack again. I truly can't decide if I'm just going to use my typical backpack/ purse I use regularly anyway, or if I want to adopt a formal "diaper bag" again. I love being able to be all minimal so going from taking a purse just for me to being a pack mule again is not a welcome thing :joy:
Any features you would recommend? Definitely back pack/ ability to be hands free. I went in thinking I'd be fine with a messenger/ cross body and with baby carriers, needing to move quickly, etc -- backpack is key. I Also think having a pocket dedicated to the parent (keys, wallet, sunnies, etc.) for you to be able to quick-grab YOUR items so you aren't digging through baby gear is helpful.

I'm looking for a lower-profile backpack that is aesthetically pleasing... I don't think I need a dedicated bottle pocket or wipe holder (features of former bags that while nice, weren't wholly necessary). I did learn that for the most part - you need less in the bag than you think. If you're out and about, a majority of things can be backups you keep in your vehicle (presuming you aren't traveling largely by public transit). I had a Herschel knock off backpack and also liked the top opening  but it was such a deep back, things did get lost.

.... I am also an admitted bag lady. I love buying backpacks/ bags/ totes/ purses. It's not unlikely I will purchase like 4 diaper bags.

I'm in the minority and I loved a bag style vs a backpack style. I was gifted a very basic one that was one huge pocket and a side pocket that held the changing pad. After my 1st kid, I bought an insert that has about 8 dividers. I got it off of Esty so that it would perfectly fit my bag. I LOVE this thing! The dividers make different sized pockets that are great for bottles, wipes, diapers, extra clothes, pacis and toys, burp cloths, swaddle, and nursing cover. And each item has it's own pocket (!), never gets pushed down to the bottom, and is easily accessible without having to unshoulder, unzip, search, etc.

Edit: Actually I might have gotten it off of Amazon. This one looks very similar to what I have. Bonus, it might actually fit in a large purse!
  • I started with a Skip Hop messenger style with DS that I really didn’t care for because of the strap. It fit enough stuff though.

We switched to this diaper bag backpack style when DD came around because it was huge and we had two kids in diapers at the time and I highly recommend it. It looks like you can get it for close to $60 right now. https://www.amazon.com/Bag-Nation-Backpack-Stroller-Changing/dp/B0722W1WCT/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=2GDF81OJZBJKN&keywords=bag+nation+diaper+bag&qid=1666029823&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIyLjE1IiwicXNhIjoiMS45OCIsInFzcCI6IjAuNDcifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=bag+na%2Caps%2C189&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

It gets great reviews and when a seam started to come undone they replaced it, no questions asked. I unfortunately sold it at my garage sale earlier this year so I need a new one. I think it’s too big for one baby so I’ll probably get an Eddie Bauer one.

I actually bought a Ruvalino one from Amazon last week as I see they are popular, but I’m returning it because it feels really cheap like it won’t hold up to abuse.

We had a ruvalino one last time:

Hubby liked it because it was gender neutral, but I hated it. It felt like it did not carry nearly as much as its size suggested and the pockets where you could put adult stuff were either too small or had to share space with the bottles/formula.

Considering using a Skip Hop instead for this baby:

  • @noxacanthus I have the skip hop packing cubes that I use inside the diaper bag I have and I love them!

On that note, packing cubes are a game changer. It helps so much to keep everything organized in the bag.
