COVID boosters

Hope it’s cool to drop this here since it’s applicable to everyone. Has anyone received any guidance from their OB or midwife regarding the latest COVID boosters specific to the latest variants?

Curious to see if it is better to get it now or wait until second trimester to potentially protect baby a little.

Anyone already signed up for their booster or had a conversation with their healthcare provider about it?

Anyone planning not to get it?

(Disclaimer: I will obviously ask my OB at my next appointment, although curious what others are being advised and doing. Personally I am fully vaxed, boosted, and plan to get this one although unsure on timing).

I asked my midwife about an additional booster and she said she hasn’t heard any additional guidance on it but will keep my updated. I’ll probably end up getting another booster when she eventually recommends it. I come into contact with Covid pretty regularly through my job. Because of that, I might also start masking again when cold and flu season starts back up. Preschoolers are notoriously bad at covering their own coughs and sneezes.

I just emailed my fertility doc who I trust 100 percent and will keep you posted. I can't take advantage of it yes as I'm on an immune protocol, so it's not effective for me. But once I'm off prednisone, I plan on getting the booster (and I'll be in 2nd tri then as well).

I have the same question, planning to ask at my appt this week. I think I might get it ASAP since I take public transit. I still wear a mask on the bus and train, but I’m in the minority now and I get at least one notification a month on my phone that I’ve been in close contact with someone who tested positive. Somehow I still haven’t had Covid, but it’s only a matter of time!

@acleverusername I feel ya on the prednisone. My original vaccines were delayed while I was getting off it. Such a helpful drug but a blessing and a curse! Hope it goes smoothly for you.

@etnyah makes sense! I don’t even bother with the notifications anymore bc it’s still everywhere. Also KNOCK ON WOOD!!

Thanks so much for starting this convo, this has been top of mind for me as well! I will most likely wait until after 1st trimester is over, more so because I'm paranoid, this is not based in any science. I am 100% pro vaccination I am just more hesitant with this latest "new" booster as its new & there isn't much information but I'm also super scared of getting Covid pregnant...

This thread is giving me deja vu 🤪 the covid vaccine was newly available to me during the final months of my last pregnancy...husband and I argued over it. Ultimately I waited until after delivery to get vaccinated. I never got around to getting my booster though 🙈 I'll have to discuss with my OB when the best time to get boosted will be. I somehow have managed to make it this far without getting covid, not trying to continue testing fate while pregnant

I had the same question about waiting a little longer to provide more protection into the winter/ spring. My OB said pregnant women are eligible after 3 months, so I could get 2 boosters (as long as guidelines don’t change). I’m planning to get the new booster in the next week or so. I’m doing my flu shot separately a week later because I’m so tired as it is, I can’t imagine how wiped out I’d be after 2 vaccines the same day!

I had the initial two vaccines when everything first came out, but had not gotten any boosters prior to finding out I was expecting. When I saw my OB two weeks ago (9-wk appointment) she strongly encouraged me to go ahead and get a booster ASAP.

I initially worried a bit about doing so during the first trimester, but with step kiddos back in school and their biomom less than conscious about most things I was concerned about the possibility of exposure, so I went ahead and got boosted last week. Hopefully my "better safe than sorry" logic was the right way to go....

Just circling back on this thread to say that I spoke to the Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor at the hospital today about timing for the booster, he recommended "off the record" that we wait until 18 weeks. His reasoning was that by that time the baby's development is further along. He said they are told to recommend it at any time, but he feels its best to wait, so we'll be doing so.

I will be getting the booster probably between 18-24 weeks.

And I'm getting the flu vaccine in the next 2 weeks I think. I just want to space them out in case either or both knock me out.

Thanks for the insight! My OB suggested getting the booster and the flu vaccine separately. Now I just need to coordinate with my husband’s travel schedule so he can parent if I do not feel well afterward.

I like the idea of waiting until 18 weeks for the booster. That would be two weeks and one day before Thanksgiving for me, awfully close but seems doable!

I asked my OB about the booster for those of us who recently had Covid. She said technically she’s supposed to say get it right away, but likely we had the strain currently going around anyway so we’re unlikely to get it again in the near future. She told me to wait another couple months (I had it a month ago). That tracks with CDC recommendations as well. So, I’ll wait a few weeks.

Got my flu vaccine Monday at my annual physical. So thankful I just had a sore arm and no other symptoms.

Now just need to figure out when I should do the covid booster. I definitely want to do it before the holidays, so maybe a week before Thanksgiving? When I have gotten it in the past, the symptoms usually only last 2-4 days, so I think that will give me enough time to recover?

I got the booster and flu shot at the same time a week ago when I was 13w3d. I didn’t have any symptoms after the injections except pain at the injection site. I go back to work next week (had taken some time off for the first trimester after a recent miscarriage) and work in a clinic for children as well as an elementary school where these things are going around non-stop. Dr. Suggested getting the vaccines at least 2 weeks prior to going back to work to make sure my antibodies were built up. I’ve had no problems with the pregnancy or anything of that nature since getting the shots. I’ve also learned that your antibodies are passed onto your baby, thus they will be born with immunity to the virus.

I just got my second booster last Saturday (when I was almost 18 weeks). My OB didn’t have any concerns about me getting it and suggested I get it around this time because we have a big trip coming up and wanted to give it time to take effect before traveling. I also had Covid at almost 8 weeks pregnant but she said it was still fine to get it at this point. Hope this helps!

Right now my plan is to get it sometime. I honestly don’t want to though. Every time I’ve gotten the shot I’ve felt absolutely awful for like two days following. I feel worse after getting the shot then I did when I actually got covid. I know I should get it and I probably will but I’m definitely procrastinating it.

Has anyone received their bivalent booster yet? How did you feel afterwards? My appointment is for Thursday and I have Friday off from work, but I’m hoping to work on a few projects while DD is at preschool and DH flies home mid day and made dinner reservations and got tickets to our alma mater’s basketball game so I’m debating switching my appointment to tomorrow. As long as I can get a little work done on Thursday I’ll be OK and thinking I should be fine solo parenting since DD will be at school? Is this logic flawed? #overthinker

Covid booster is.scheduled for 11/21, as long as I'm feeling better by then. At the rate I'm going I won't ever be able to get it because I'll just constantly be sick from now until baby comes!

Update: I ended up getting my booster on Wednesday (18 weeks). I had a sore arm, headache, and felt a little dazed or like I was in a fog the next day. Otherwise everything went smoothly, probably the easiest of all 4 shots!
