Failed My 1st Glucose Test

Hello Mommies-to-Be! So I just got the call that I failed my first 1 hour glucose test, at 177. I eat well and have never been overweight but I’m wondering if it’s because I haven’t been exercising enough…going to test again (the three hour one) Monday. I’m nervous and just hoping for the best! Anyone else fail their first test but then pass the second? Does it depend whether you were fasting or not?

Re: Failed My 1st Glucose Test

  • I know people who failed their first test and passed the second. My doctor recommended eating something simple like eggs for breakfast for a more accurate reading

  • My doctor said no fasting before the first test so don’t worry that wasnt the issue. I was borderline with my first. And that 3 hour test was no fun. Hopefully you pass with flying colors!
  • My understanding is that GD, if one has it, has very little to do with your actual health and is more just something that happens. I woudn't beat yourself up about having done anything "wrong" whether you end up diagnosed with it or not.

Salma Hayek had famously had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my first in 2009; if celebrities can't avoid it, I'm guessing it's not that easy for anyone.
  • Just found out I failed my 1 hour as well. My sugars were 168. Bleh. 3 hour test tomorrow to see for sure.
  • Same here but I failed so bad that my Dr called it.
  • From my understanding having GD has little to nothing to do with how well you eat, your exercise habits, or weight history. The placenta produces a chemical that causes your body to be insulin resistant, how that affects you has something to do with genetics and age, but you can't prevent it the way you can Type 2 diabetes. And, failing the 1 hour test doesn't mean you have GD (25% of women fail, but fewer than 10% actually have GD). What you ate right before the test could've caused a false positive but it wouldn't cause GD. If you do end up with GD it's not your fault, there's nothing you did wrong, and your healthy lifestyle may be enough to manage it (sure your sugars spike when you drink the glucola, but if you're not doing that every day, you're able to keep your sugars in line). Keep up with eating well (if you do have GD, a diabetes specialist may help you redefine what eating "well" truly means), exercise, and follow doctor's instructions, but don't feel like you did anything wrong because you didn't.
  • I failed my 1 hour but passed my 3 hour. I have a family history of type 2 diabetes so I was pretty surprised when I passed the 3 hour. I did lose a lot of weight before getting pregnant so I’m hoping that helped. Unfortunately, my OB wanted to be sure so I just took my 2nd 3 hour yesterday. Keeping my fingers crossed!
  • I failed mine so badly that they skipped the 3 hr and gave me a glucometer. I was reassured that it had nothing to do with size, diet, exercise etc. Right now we are trying to manage with diet (I have very few things with sugar as is). I've known since I was 16 and saw my swim coach taking insulin injections for gd that I would end up with it because I hate needles so much lol. One of the midwives at my practice made me feel a lot better and I was introduced to some mutual friends who've been through it, it's really not that bad.
  • Yes I failed my 1 hour test and then passed my second test with all 3 of my pregnancies. The first test is actually pretty hard to pass. Also if you fail has zero to do with how fit you are or if you eat well etc etc. it can happen to anyone! Good luck with your second test.
  • I failed my first test and passed the 3 hr test with flying colors
  • I failed my 1 hour one at 156 last week and have the 3 hour one in a few days! I'm quite nervous.
