Re: GTKY 10/4: Occupations
I am an eCommerce merchandising specialist for a lighting company. I basically do this all day.
-What do you like most about what you do?
It's always evolving and each of the retail sites I work with have distinct "personalities." And the job security of working in eCommerce can't be beat: the pandemic forced a lot of people to shop online and many of them are staying! I also have some of the coolest coworkers
-What do you like least about what you do?
Some of the tasks can get redundant. My biggest customer has no other way to load images other than one at a time. Most of our products have 10 images and we tend to release 50-100 products at a time, so the process can take all day

If you ever see a "360 spin" image on a product, it was created by taking 24 images of the item at 15-degree angles. Also, light color is measured in degrees Kelvin, but it's not the same as astronomical degrees Kelvin. So you're not going to fry yourself by installing a 3000K bulb
I'm the assistant to the head of school at a small private school in Kentucky. I also teach a few theatre classes, which is a blast.
-What do you like most about what you do?
The teaching is a freakin blast. I love it so much. In my "real" job (the assistant part), I really enjoy writing official communications from and and speeches for my boss. I'm also on the senior leadership team for the school (and I completely adore this school), so I really enjoy being a part of the big decision-making processes.
-What do you like least about what you do?
It's boring af most days. The theatre stuff also takes a ton of time outside of school hours, which is challenging.

A lot of people assume that you have to be like a bazillionaire to send your kids to private schools, but (at least around here) there's a ton of financial aid. ALSO private school teachers get paid significantly less than public school teachers. Like ... significantly less.
I am a public school orchestra teacher, working in 4 schools with grades 4-12.
-What do you like most about what you do?
that aha moment when something tough finally clicks with a student. I also LOVE that I teach at neighbor schools, so I continue with the majority of my students from age 9-18. I love watching them grow up.
-What do you like least about what you do?
It is so insanely busy, sharing schedules between 4 schools. Also, elementary, middle and high all have different start/end times and bell schedules, so it’s a lot to juggle. I also don’t have classrooms of my own, so it’s hard not having an anchor place to call my own. I do have an office at one school, so that’s where a lot of my stuff lives.

-What do you like most about what you do? Employee appreciation and strategizing on improving company culture. I also find Payroll relaxing.
-What do you like least about what you do? Employee relations.
-Share something about your profession/industry that most people wouldn't know! I work in cosmetics manufacturing and that world is such a vast world with so much...definitely not something I knew before I started here.
I’m a User Experience (UX) designer at a digital agency. We’re hired by big companies to improve their online experiences.
-What do you like most about what you do?
I love solving logic puzzles and it feels good to know I’m improving experiences for people. Every time I use a bad, confusing or frustrating website or app I think about how I’m glad to be someone making things better and easier to use. I have a focus in accessibility so I think about how to make the web more usable for people with disabilities, too.
-What do you like least about what you do?
Working for an agency is hard. The clients are really varied and the timelines are tight. So sometimes you get staffed on a project for an automotive company and a restaurant chain and a healthcare product at the same time and have to absorb and keep straight knowledge from all those industries at the same time all while working very fast.
-Share something about your profession/industry that most people wouldn't know!
a lot of the work in tech is just borrowing ideas and patterns from other companies
-What do you do for a living? (Bonus if you can represent it with a gif!) I am a physician assistant (PA) and I work in surgery in the inpatient setting. We cover burn surg, trauma surg and emergency surg.
-What do you like most about what you do? It is fast pace and I am learning new things constantly. I love my coworkers and patients.
-What do you like least about what you do? The hours are long
-Share something about your profession/industry that most people wouldn't know! Not sure if everyone knows what a PA is but its a masters degree that makes you what is called an advanced practice provider (includes PAs and nurse practitioners). I honestly do not know if there is a Canada equivalent?? We see our own patients independently, evaluate/treat/order labs and tests/ diagnose and can write scripts for meds. It is great because I get to practice medicine but only had to do 6 years of school (instead of 10+ for med school/residency) and have a great work/life balance.
Veterinary Radiologist
-What do you like most about what you do?
My job looks different every day. It's challenging and I feel like I'm doing something worthwhile.
-What do you like least about what you do?
I don't always have the answers people need.
-Share something about your profession/ industry that most people wouldn't know!
A lot of veterinarians you encounter randomly in public (like sitting next to on an airplane) will lie to you if you ask what they do for a living so as to avoid answering questions about your dog... 😆
-What do you like most about what you do? i love my creative work the most, but my desk job is wonderfully flexible and i have worked remotely for the past 5 years. i also love my co-workers.
-What do you like least about what you do? my finance job pays the bills but it is not my passion, i envy people who's work and passions line up.
-Share something about your profession/industry that most people wouldn't know! that it exists? most people don't know that the uber wealthy have financial offices that handle all of their bills etc. as for my creative work - it is really hard to make consistently good content even though the best stuff looks effortless.
-What do you like most about what you do? Academic freedom to research what I love - consumer behavior in interpersonal contexts (think: romantic couples and how they manage money)
-What do you like least about what you do? That my fate is in the hands of anonymous reviewers. I’m expected to publish in a certain tier of journal, which is exceedingly hard.
-Share something about your profession/industry that most people wouldn't know! My primary role is NOT teaching. I’m trained in research, which is 70% of my role. I teach three sections of one class every academic year.
-What do you do for a living? I’m a tattoo artist of 21 years. I specialize in fine line, illustrative black work, and neo traditional color.
-What do you like most about what you do? I have some of the best clients, and I work in a woman-owned/all female artist studio with some pretty amazing ladies. We all work really well together so there’s no drama. It’s a really supportive and comfortable atmosphere where everyone is always growing.
-What do you like least about what you do? Having to maintain a work presence on various social media platforms to satisfy the algorithms. Periodic creative burnout if I’m not careful enough with my work/life balance.
-Share something about your profession/industry that most people wouldn't know! There is an incredible amount of time spent on the back end, between social media, emails with clients, organizing bookings, the hours spent composing the design, and setting up before you ever sit down to get it. Also, if your artist of choice is booked out for months, take that as a sign they are very likely worth the wait.
