Depression

has a has anyone been diagnosed with depression during their pregnancy? If so are you taking antidepressants? Scared to take them during pregnancy with the side effects and baby having withdrawals.

Re: Depression

  • I had depression prior to pregnancy. Its so important to take care of your mental health. Their are pregnancy safe medications. I'm currently on them. It has helped me tremendously. Talk also to your thearpist about it as well.

  • Yup, depression before l. It amped up but I have to take lower doses. Seeing my doc twice as often now.
  • While I haven't had a diagnosis of depression during pregnancy, I am on a medication (off-label treatment for a different condition) that is technically an antidepressant. I've read a lot about medication use in pregnancy, particularly for depression and anxiety, and in general the benefits way outweigh the risks. Your doctor should be able to look at the options and provide the safest medication that can provide you relief. From everything I've read, untreated depression is worse for baby than the effects of medication; if doctor is recommending it and aware of your pregnancy and considering that in medication choice, please feel validated that you can take medication and it can be the best choice for your baby.
  • If left untreated during pregnancy, you're also at a much higher risk for bad post partum depression. I've had a few close friends who suffered terrible ppd with their 1st pregnancies, but got early intervention in their 2nd ones and had much more positive experiences. Always take care of yourself!!
  • Pregnant and on antidepressants here! I even had to up my dosage during my first pregnancy because the depression got worse. They are perfectly safe for the baby. When you're depressed it's hard to live a healthy lifestyle, heck, it's hard to get out of bed. It's not good for you or the baby. It's so important to take care of yourself. Just talk to your doctor. You can start small with a low dose and see how it goes from there. Good luck!
  • I’ve struggled with depression since I was a teen and have been on antidepressants. I wanted to try stopping them during pregnancy and have been ok up until this last month. I plan on restarting. I previously took fluoxetine(Prozac) and wellbutrin. My OB prefers I restart fluoxetine and my psychiatrist prefers wellbutrin during pregnancy.

Both seem relatively safe during pregnancy from what I have read. Anyone else comfortable sharing what antidepressant they are taking? I’m asking my psychiatrist if she’s ok with me going with my OB’s preference; which I’m hoping and thinking she will be fine with. Just curious as to what others experiences maybe with these meds during pregnancy.

  • I was on 20mg fluoxetine prior to pregnancy, was able to be off of it from about 5wks until sometime in early August (around 24ish wks?) until my anxiety and depression came back with a vengeance. So I’m back on the same dose and I really think it’s making a difference.

Like @00kim00 said, I started looking at the risks and benefits, and though there are risks for taking meds, there are risks for having untreated depression as well. Personally I’m glad I got back on medication, since I feel like baby is less stressed with less stress in my system, and I have had more energy to take care of my health. 💗
  • Thankful to have a platform like this 🙏🏼☺️ I did talk to my OB and got back on my fluoxetine today.
