1st Trimester

First trimester anxiety

What are some things to calm nerves in early pregnancy? I go for my first appointment in 28 days and recently my sister in law went to a first ultrasound where a heartbeat wasn’t detected. I’m having a lot of anxiety with helping her deal with this and going to the doctor in almost a month, I’m afraid I’m going to stress myself out ..

Re: First trimester anxiety

  • I've had a ton of anxiety after having had a couple of miscarriages. This might sound weird, but when I get in a negative headspace sometimes I look around and think, "Literally every person around me and on this planet is the result of a pregnancy that made it." It sometimes helps me put things into perspective and remember that it's not all doom and gloom.

At the same time, anxiety is inevitable, probably whether or not you've personally experienced loss. But it sounds like you're also one of your sister in law's emotional support people right now, so it makes sense you're feeling some extra stress. To some extent, I think we have to acknowledge and accept that anxiety as part of the experience but find the little things that can help soothe or distract the nerves - a long walk, a good hug from a friend or partner, getting lost in a novel... I've been finding that rom-com books are a good distraction for me! And if you're finding the burden of being there for your sister in law to be too much for you, maybe you can think about some boundaries that would help you. You don't even necessarily have to tell anyone else you're setting some emotional boundaries - it could just be a personal thing where you reflect on what your needs are and how you can give yourself some extra space and ease the emotional burden if it's too heavy as you're also embarking on your own pregnancy journey.

  • Thank you for the response that does help and reminds me that other people are going through the same things. I’m trying to pick up a show and do more, my doctor has offered to let me come get blood tests done to see if blood levels are rising just to ease my anxiety some. 🥹
  • I completely understand. I feel the exact same way. It took us 2 years to conceive our second. I had all but given up because infertility treatment wasn’t an option for us. So I was very surprised when we got our BFP

I have constant anxiety about whether or not this baby sticks or if it’s ectopic etc. Every little cramp ache twitch discharge——everything and anything has me questioning if all will be ok. I don’t have any words of advice.. just… solidarity.
  • How far along are you? I’ll be thinking of you. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was younger but have had a successful pregnancy and a now 4 year old. I just wasn’t sure if or when I would ever get pregnant again and the anxiety of it all just has me going round and round in my head.
  • I am 5w4D today. 6 weeks will be Thursday. I ended up having a small amount.. I mean small. Like smaller than pinky nail amount of bright pink discharge a few hours ago. I haven’t had any more since but I do have a consistent amount of “cramping.” Sort of feels like period cramps

Awe I miss when my little guy was younger, he turned 6 this past may.

I totally understand the anxiety, we honestly thought it wasn’t going to happen for us anymore. I’ll be thinking of you and wishing you the best. Check in when you can
  • Hello! I am 8w2d and wanted to mention that around 5-7 weeks I had pretty consistent cramping almost every day. I was googling multiple times a day “what kind of cramping is normal in early pregnancy” and things like this all the time and the answer is always, it’s normal. Hope that makes you feel better!
