Product Spotlight: Baby Apparel

Sorry for the late post! This is a fun one, baby apparel!

What brands do you like?

For STM+ what types of items do you recommend having on hand/including on your registry?

How are you/have you navigated sizing and seasons? (In other words, babies come in all different sizes and it can be hard to predict what size baby will be in winter/summer, etc).

Bonus, do you want to show off any favorite baby clothes?

Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Apparel

  • Personally I’m a big fan of other people NOT buying my kids clothes as soooo much went unworn with my first because it was out of season or not my style etc and I really enjoy shopping at our local second hand store becauseeee kids clothes are expensive lol

for the first three months I really only had baby in a footy sleeper, I really like zippy jams, kyte, little sleepies, Etc anything bamboo cotton because their really is so fragile at this stage … then I started doing outfits around 3 months lol and I love for my boy gap jeans/ pants, roots rompers, H&M comfy clothes, “some” carters items and I’ve always dressed my dude in jeans and a T- shirt (PS can get plain boys t shirts at childrens place for cheap!)

so far finding good quality girls clothes has been difficult I find as I’m very particular on materials lol but I like the brand loved baby and Zara so far!

  • Unless baby is at or under 7lbs, you probably won't get much wear from NB clothes.
Agree that for the first few months it was mostly sleepers, but the snap ones are awful motn.  They grow into a new size every two months so for the first year, I liked Burt's Bees, Gap, Carter's, and cloud island.
Definitely see how fast your kiddo seems to grow before getting ahead of yourself on sizes by season.

  • I was able to find boxes of clothes on Facebook marketplace and they are sized and season appropriate. I’ve only grabbed 0-6 months as we don’t have much storage and then as he grows sell/donate those and get the next bunch. I’ve bought a few new things in terms of a bunting bag, hats and some socks for the colder months. I found shopping the sales you can get great deals and my gf recommended buying clothes on clearance for the following year.
  • Like @anniez85 says, it's easy to find cheap used baby clothes lots on Facebook or Nextdoor as they grow out of things so quick! I was lucky enough to get hand-me-downs from various people (both with my girl and boy) but there was still some gaps to fill. Plus, it's hard to resist buying a few cute things since baby clothes are so adorable 😍.

So far I've liked Carters, Primary, and Hanna Anderson. Primary and HA are a bit more expensive but they have frequent sales and their clothes are more durable.
  • My mom went way overboard when I was pregnant with my son and got him what she thought would be a years worth of clothes.  Then my son was born and he was tiny, and he continued to stay tiny (he was below 1% for height and weight until just recently). We ended up having to run out to buy premie sizes and a lot of the clothes she bought him didn’t fit during the expected season and he ended up not being able to wear a bunch of it.  While our situation was pretty uncommon, I would still recommend being super careful about buying a ton ahead of time.

I mostly just plan on getting a few onesies and footie pajamas to start. Onesies are pretty seasonally universal, during the winter they are a great under layer and in hot weather they can be an entire outfit.  The footie pjs with built in mittens are great for newborns because they are not going to keep mittens and socks on in my experience.

As for brands, all brands size their clothes slightly differently which can be super annoying. For example I find that Carter’s clothes tend to run a little narrow, which fits my son who is on the thinner side better then some other brands like Baby Gap which in my experience runs very wide and short.
