1st Trimester

Changing providers after first trimester

HI! This is a random and maybe stupid question... I just moved to a small town and the hospital nearby can do most of my prenatal appointments but would require me to deliver in another city. There's a city in a different direction I'd rather deliver at if I have to make the drive anyway but they can't get me in for an 8 week ultrasound until I'm at 11 weeks. I am wondering if I could just keep my appointments with my current provider until after my ultrasound and then switch before 12 weeks. I am wondering if anyone has done this or has advice. Thanks 😊

  • You can, sure, but you also can just wait until 11 weeks. It’s not uncommon to not have an appointment until closer to 12 weeks, especially if your cycles are regular and thus you don’t “need” an early ultrasound.

Yes, you can do whatever way works for you- do your 8 week where you are and schedule your next one with the new practice, or skip the 8 week and start with the 11 week. I've been considering switching providers since the beginning, but took a while to decide for sure. My current provider is close, but obgyns, and the hospital that's less than 10 minutes from my house (and the obgyns) have a reputation for high intervention births. There's a hospital 45 minutes away that's a midwife centered practice and more supportive of natural births, which is much more what I'm looking for, but the distance for prenatal visits and the delivery (in the winter!) is daunting. I've kept all my appointments at the first clinic until the new clinic could get me in, and when they were able to schedule my 28 week visit the same week I'd have seen the local practice, I just called the first place to let them know I'm was transferring my care. They did need to review my records and approve me, whereas my first clinic I was just automatically their patient. My only advice is not to wait too long- practices do have limits on how many patients they can take who are due in a particular month, so if the new practice might become full, they may not accept you, so the longer you wait the more possible it is that could happen.
  • I switched providers in the 2nd trimester, and it worked out. They'll want you to have your medical records sent from the first OB.
