What's everyone want to talk about this week?

Re: weekly random w.o. 9/12

  • STM/TTM - has anyone done Disney pregnant? I panicked when I found out about this baby that I had a very tiny window to take my 2 daughters (6 and 3) to Disneyworld (I don't want to take an infant) and I wanted to take them while they are still very much in the magic of the Princesses. So I booked us to go late November, I'll be 19ish weeks I believe... am I insane? Any tips?

  • @MsBeachNJ my sister just did this in May with her (at the time) 15 month old. She was about 14-15 weeks pregnant. I don't think you're insane! You'll be in the second trimester so hopefully in that sweet spot of less nausea and more energy. Plus the weather should be nice in November
  • @nsk489 that gives me hope, thank you!! If she has any tips, please do share!

  • It’ll probably be a blast! I wouldn’t do a theme park pregnant because I love rides, but with kiddos that young they can’t go on anything too wild anyway :)

  • @abirdd9 I am SO not a ride person - so I'm kind of happy to have an excuse ;)

  • I went to Disney in my second trimester a few years back. So long as you don’t mind not going on rides you’ll be fine. Wear comfy shoes and drink lots of water. Enjoy all the delicious food.
  • My sister (33, single, no kids) is getting a puppy for the first time soon. I just received a birth announcement in the mail (adorable) with a QR code to an Amazon registry on the back (WTF?).

  • A registry for a puppy??? What's on it? Who did she send it to? Beyond my mom, I can't think of anyone that would want to be told to buy something for my dog!
  • @abirdd9 that's definitely a new one 😬
  • Ugh so this is annoying. I set up an appt with MFM and they want to see me for two things: genetic consultation and NT scan. All I want is NIPT. I assume we’ll discuss NIPT during the consult on Wednesday, but it’s a virtual appt so no blood draw that time. I couldn’t care less about the NT scan but it’s standard procedure for them to do it for all MFM patients? I wouldn’t mind an extra US, except my insurance is shit and even though it’s covered, it’ll cost me around $1,000. I don’t expect to meet my sky high deductible this year so it’s just money lost. I really hope I can talk them out of it and only do the blood draw. Either way, it’s not happening this week.

  • @abirdd9 we definitely need to know whats on this registry...

@etnyah I feel like with this not being my first go round, I should know, but what is the difference between NT scan and NIPT?

  • @MsBeachNJ NT scan is technically a part of NIPT, but I don’t think it’s necessary. NIPT itself is a blood draw, the NT scan is an ultrasound where they measure the thickness of fluid buildup in baby’s neck. This is specifically to screen for Down syndrome. Together with the blood test result it’ll give you a good picture of DS risk.

I don’t think the NT scan is necessary in my case, although I wouldn’t mind it if it didn’t cost too much.

Ohhh no. My office has arranged a “fun” outing for everyone in a couple weeks, where we all go on a 100 year old sailboat trip. I can’t think of anything else I’d rather not do. I’m nauseous just thinking about it. I’ll be 13 weeks by then and I plan to tell work about the pregnancy that week. If not for being pukey I’d be excited but  :#

  • I’m not a doctor, but I don’t think intentionally losing weight during pregnancy is recommended…
  • @lillibettt I would find another dress that is comfortable and will accommodate your growing & changing body, or re-order the dress you love in a larger size.
  • well, got a whole new batch of stress this week. Received a great job offer but going through their benefits and their maternity leave kicks in after 1 year of employment, which obviously doesn’t work for me since I am due in April….no idea what to do?! I haven’t told them yet as I’m still so early, but I feel like I have to to ask about an exception for this?! Or would I take short term disability instead?? First time mom here with all the questions and no idea what to do or how to handle this situation! Help!

@cortsull0724 (I'm in HR) I would highly recommend being fully transparent with your potential new employer, it will build trust from the start. You could say that you are still very early and aren't sharing the news yet but wanted them to be aware and also wanted to know what that would mean for you with regards to time off when the baby is born, etc. (Editing to add- I only recommend this now that you have an offer in hand, I would otherwise not release this information in the interview process)

  • Thanks so much for the reply @MsBeachNJ . My husband and I were texting the same back and forth because I will have to say something e eventually anyways. I just spoke to them and asked if there was anything we could work out so hopefully there is! Oh the things that are new in this experience haha!
  • The registry includes reasonable items, but I'm still just so baffled at it all.

A toothbrush/paste, food scoop, slicker brush, dog fur cleaning wipes, poop bag dispenser, stain remover, puppy pads, a high velocity dryer, a $100 air purifier, a dog travel backpack, portable water dispenser, clicker trainer, leash, a giant kennel, a couple gates.

All crap one needs for a dog, but buy it yourself.

  • @cortsull0724 I would try to negotiate maternity leave as part of your hiring package. My husband accepted a new job 1 month before our son was born--he would have gotten 12 weeks paternity leave with his previous company, the new company offered 10 weeks but he wasn't eligible until after 6 months I think? He was able to negotiate 2 weeks of leave (which was better than nothing)
Short term disability can be tricky. They count pregnancy as a "pre existing condition" so you might not be eligible? Something to discuss with HR!
  • My dog is deaf due to old age so she's quite clingy normally. Lately it's ramped up. Rather than sleeping next to me on the floor, she wants to be touching or even draped over me. She gets really uncomfortable anytime the cat gets near me (the three of us have lived together for 12 years- the dog is 13 cat is 12). The last couple days she gives the cat a stink eye and bark when she sees her approach while I'm resting. Have you all noticed behavioral changes in pets once your hormones shifted?
  • @sambo0423 my dog has become clingy/more cuddly in the last couple of weeks. I think around 7-8 weeks they can detect the hormonal changes happening in our bodies.
