2nd Trimester

Baby movement?

I’m a first time mom after four losses and have felt small movements the past few weeks but VERY infrequently. Flutters around 16 weeks then really nothing. At 17 weeks a stronger sensation of movement and then again, nothing. Maybe little things here and there but can’t tell if it’s in my head. I’m at 18,3 and am not sure if that’s normal or I should be concerned. The longer it goes without feeling anything the more worried I get.

Re: Baby movement?

  • they’re super sporadic when they first start— i started feeling flutters at 14 weeks and didn’t start confidently feeling her move daily until like 21. my doctor told me at 22 that as long as i feel her once a day we’re good and that they don’t start kick counting until 28. i’m 25 right now and have started to notice her wake/sleep patterns so i know when to expect her movements. i do get concerned if she isn’t moving at her normal times, but i had a doppler that i got at the beginning of pregnancy that i used to check her heartbeat before she had movement patterns if i didn’t feel her for some time, but now i just eat or drink something and lay down for a little while, which usually gets her going. all of that to say, try not to worry too much! it’s totally normal to not have big or noticeable movements at your gestation. baby is still small, and probably napping majority of the time anyways 😊

@knottie2f93448b4aec7eaa I had the same questions and here is what two different doctors told me. First thing is that you will feel more kicking if you have a posterior placenta - the baby is just closer to your skin.
Second, the baby is kicking all the time, we just don’t feel it all the time because the baby still has so much space to move around. When you go to your 20 weeks appt you’ll notice that the baby is moving around a lot, but you don’t feel it.
Also a good idea with the doppler - when I get too anxious I use it and it helps me to calm down. But make sure to look into a few youtube training videos before using it so you don’t freak out if you don’t find the heartbeat immediately. Oh also - my doppler ‘hears’ everything but doesn’t show correct numbers, so I count the heartbeat myself.
    Hope this helps!

I sincerely understand being extra attuned to this after loss. You’re doing great.  This is my third pregnancy (that’s gotten this far) and I still wasn’t CERTAIN I felt movement until 19 weeks. And even then it was only in the evening when I laid down before bed. They say more seasoned moms can identify flutters sooner, but for me, until it’s a real kick, I don’t feel like I’m certain. With any of my pregnancies and I feel like I’m pretty in tune with my body. So try to hang in there and get a little closer to halfway! Placenta position matters, too, like others have said. Dopplers do help for peace of mind if you don’t mind dropping the cash (check FB marketplace?). Although I wouldn’t at this point since you’re so close to feeling your baby! Good luck!!
