New Jersey parents: 2yr lead test and blood count

Hello, we have a 2.5 year old and our pediatrician recommended a blood test for our child for lead testing and blood count. We have brought our child to a lab but the phlebotomist couldn't find a vein his arm. He is now scared of going to the doctor's office.
Question: Is this lead test/blood count required? Any issues if we just skip this test? Please share your thoughts. Thank you.

Re: New Jersey parents: 2yr lead test and blood count

  • I’ll start by saying I’m not in healthcare and don’t know much about it. This is solely my opinion as a parent.

I would get it done. I’d recondition the doctors office with lots of positive associations. Maybe just go to the parking lot one day with a favorite treat or toy and explain that this is the doctor and they want to help you while playing with said treat or toy. Ask some questions about why they are scared and address their concerns. Validate that you know they got hurt, and that it’s scary. Also emphasize that it’s important to not be sick. Then leave. Don’t even go in. Then next time do the same before the appointment.

Ultimately, I think it’s important to have that health information, especially at 2.5yo. Lots of brain development around that time. Even if it’s traumatic, that’s temporary. The effects of lead are permanent.

If it’s a bad experience again, do the parking lot routine a couple more times afterwards. You certainly don’t want your child scared of the doctor. Counterconditioning is pretty easy for toddlers.

    Good luck!
