Gestational Diabetes

Hi Ladies,

I went to my glucose test at 29 weeks. Long story short, i have GD but my doctor forgot to call me - he’s a good doc but somehow slipped up on this - so i didn’t know until 31 weeks. I’m 33 wks today and for the past 2 weeks have been finger pricking to check my numbers. My morning fastings are always a little high. He wants me at 90 but they’re usually between 90-95. My question and concern is this: since i had GD but didn’t know (and even now that i do know - still have high numbers at times) is there potential harm to the baby? I have seen my OB twice since finding out and had ultrasounds both times and both times baby looked good. I am just so paranoid now that it could affect her at some point. I will see my OB thurs and imagine he will put me on medication then. Thanks in advance ladies.

  • For fasting sugars, make sure you’re eating a high protein snack before bed and maybe consider breaking up your breakfast into 2 smaller meals that are carb/protein balanced.

A few numbers won’t matter but consistently having high sugars could have an effect, not only on the size of the baby but also the quality in your placenta. When I had it they did a growth scan at 35 weeks to not only measure baby but to look at fluid levels and placenta. Premature failure of the placenta is one of the risks of uncontrolled GD and why many doctors won’t allow you to go past 40weeks. I was seeing a maternal fetal medicine doctor when I had GD.

  • Thanks for ur reply! I have been trying a few different high protein snacks at night, including the Glucerna shakes (my doctor recommended them). Sometimes the snacks work but I’d say 90% of the time my number is 90 or a little above. I’ll see what he says when i see him this week but I’m almost certain he’ll put me on medicine. If that’s what i need so be it, i just want to make sure the baby is ok
