Cramping in early pregnancy

What is considered normal cramping in early pregnancy and just expanding of the uterus. I’m super early in my pregnancy in my fourth week and I’ve been having mild “menstral” like cramping intermittently for 3 or 4 days. The cramps happen periodically throughout the day and last 10-15 seconds.. I have not identified any common precursor, diet, exercise, changing positions, etc to cause them.

Is this something you have experienced? Is it normal? It gives me anxiety.

Re: Cramping in early pregnancy

  • I have been experiencing something similar. It's giving me so much anxiety. I'm also in my fourth week. I spoke with a nurse who told me as long as the cramping isn't "persistent" and there's no bleeding she wasn't concerned, for my case. Maybe you can speak with your doctor. From what I heard some cramping can be normal but shouldn't be persistent.

  • I'm 4W6D and I've been getting mild menstrual-like cramps on and off since I got my BFP. From what I gather it's generally normal unless the pain doesn't go away or gets worse.
With my first pregnancy, I used to wake up in the middle of the night with cramps because I had to pee and my uterus was getting in the way of my bladder! It was always scary to wake up to, but the cramps always went away after I used the bathroom.
  • Hey there! I'm 5w2d and did an IVF FET (frozen embryo transfer) and have had tons of cramping. I've had 3 HCG blood tests and they're all super strong so I'm not at all worried! My acupuncturist said some women have cramps all throughout their first trimester. Recently they've started to be less persistent, but I'd say the 4th week was when I had them every day- even wanting tylenol at night! Nothing more than very slight spotting though so it's to be expected! Now as they're less frequent it's actually had me going, "are you still growing in there babygirl?" - so I've come to appreciate those cramps because they've been telling me she's burrowing in and making her home. :) I hope that helps!!
  • oh!! DRINK TONS of water-- that helps a LOT with the cramping!!
  • Also to the earlier comment- mine WERE persistent; but they weren't severe-- which is when they want to make sure you aren't having an ectopic. Given that my HCG levels were solid we haven't worried about that- I think some women just cramp more than others!
  • Thank you for your comments!!! I’ve increased my water intake and that has helped a little. I’m just so anxious as I’ve had a previous miscarriage and I’m so anxious all the time !!
  • I've had two pregnancies- the first was ectopic, and I'm now at 23 weeks, so I get the anxiety. With the ectopic, the cramps were severe (like menstrual cramps, but my regular cramps have always been bad because of endometriosis). With this pregnancy, I did have mild cramps that didn't last too long (definitely less than an hour at a time, I think less than half an hour) and we're mild; they started pretty early and I got them off and on through the first trimester. My husband often tried to reassure me it's just my uterus stretching, and ultimately I think it was. If you're not having any bleeding, it's totally normal. If you have spotting, it may still be normal. Anything more than spotting and I'd personally be worried. BUT, definitely call your doctor for advice ANY time you're worried. We are not your doctor! Please don't trust random strangers on the internet for advice that effects the health of your baby.
  • Since last night I've had a persistent pinch in my abdomen, off center to the right. It's not severe but it's also not going away. Not an ache like a cramp. Do you all feel pinches? 6w4d, ftm. I called my doctor but they're closed for the holiday. My first appt is in 2 weeks (Sept 20).
