Re: Product Spotlight, Newborn Feeding Series: Breast Feeding, Pumps, and accessories

  • Breastfeeding must haves before baby comes: nursing bras/tanks, bamboo pads for leaks, nipple butter, cold soothies, haaka, boppy (or other nursing pillow)

Pumping items: I have the Spectra with battery, definitely recommend that over having to be teathered to a wall, I haven't tried the elvie or the like but interested in hearing if others have. I liked the kiinde bags and converter to pump into those, since pouring in and out of those was clean and easy.  Cleaning wipes for pump parts at work, sterilizer bags for cleaning at home. Pumping bra also necessary, and a pump bag to cart it all around to and from work or elsewhere.

I can add brands or links if anyone is interested.

  • I had the spectra that plugged into the wall last time.  I loved it as a pump but hated being tied to the wall.  Definitely planning on seeing about getting the battery one this time.
  • @beccaneu The Spectra with the battery is a great pump. With my insurance last time I had to pay $50 out of pocket to get it (insurance covered the rest) and it was worth it.

@willrunforcookies My wireless pumping knowledge is now a bit over two years out of date, and I know there have been several new generations of wireless in the meantime. I did have a Willow. On the one hand, you really can do things like run errands, eat dinner, etc with the pumps on. On the other hand most people will find they get more expressed from a conventional pump, like Spectra, than a wireless. For me the Willow was also painful to use, although I tried a bunch of hacks to help. It’s possible the newer versions are better. I knew a couple people with the Elvie and, again, at the time, the Elvie is wireless but if you bend it leaks (possibly they have fixed this now), and the complaint was the Elvie’s suction was weak and not much would be expressed.

My must haves for breastfeeding: a pillow of some kind (I had a Boppy), some kind of nursing pads (there are lots of reusable ones you can get), a Hakaa (watch a video on how to use it), nursing bras/tanks, get a prescription for nipple salve if you can, and things like gel/ice packs may help with soreness. Also, utilize the lactation consultants in the hospital as much as you can.

This is a Hakaa, and it’s an easy way to build up a small stash by putting it on the opposite breast from what baby is on when you’re especially full - for example first thing in the morning. I used to get an easy ounce or so every morning thus way without actively pumping. Just be careful not to knock it over (which I’ve done many times 🤦🏻‍♀️).
