2nd Trimester

has anyone else had placenta previa?

I'm 14 weeks tomorrow and last Thursday was diagnosed with marginal placenta previa after some bleeding and passing a clot. the bleeding stopped the next day and did not happen again until this morning. but this time it's thinner, turning my urine red and no clots.

I guess I'm just looking for someone who's been through it to talk about it with and ease my mind a bit. any other women out there with a similar experience?

thanks in advance!

Re: has anyone else had placenta previa?

  • I had a partial previa and it resolved itself. As your uterus gets bigger it will tend to grow away from the birth canal. Sometimes it won’t move far enough for them to be comfortable with a vaginal birth and you would have a scheduled c section.

  • I'm glad it resolved itself. they told me most likely that will happen for me as well. I think it just made me nervous to not bleed for a week and suddenly start again. and I don't know what caused it. I've been on pelvic rest so I'm not really doing much. the only thing I did differently was some stretches for my back pain last night and the night before. I just didn't think that stretching would be too strenuous.

thank you for your reply, I appreciate the reassurance
  • Depending on the reason for the bleeding it may well have been nothing that you did. Some things in pregnancy just bleed. Placenta previa is likely not the reason.

  • I had complete placenta previa in my first pregnancy. Had some spotting but no major bleeds, was on pelvic rest which got a little stricter around 26 weeks. Mine resolved at 29 weeks thankfully, but the placenta was still rather low so my son couldn't get head down. My water broke at 34+0 and I delivered with an emergent C-section because he was transverse
  • the day i posted this i ended up passing a clot the size of a tennis ball and went to the emergency room because i didnt know it was a clot.  baby was okay and the placenta previa ended up resolving itself by 17 weeks, but the reason for the dark red/brown daily bleeding for over a month was actually due to a hematoma right above my cervix. I still bleed a little every other day or so, but it is shrinking thankfully and now the bleeding is mostly just pink. now the placenta is anterior so even though I'm 19 weeks I can't feel the baby yet. they said maybe not until 20 or later, but everything seems to be going normal with his development so I'm not constantly stressing about it.

thank you so much for responding. I'm sorry you had such a scary experience with yours.
  • Oh my… I’m going through something similar… I (now 18 weeks, first pregnancy, through IVF) was diagnosed with placenta previa complete via ultrasound because I had some pink mucus a few weeks ago, am on pelvic rest, and two days ago had a huge bleed. I was horrified/terrified and went to the ED. They said sometimes it happens for no major reason… Luckily the baby is ok so far - I’m following up with my OB tomorrow but I’m still spotting a bit, especially when I’m walking around.

Does anyone have any tips on how to cope with this? The bleed happened at work and luckily I was wearing black pants but it soaked through my underwear and everything as it was literally painless and I didn’t feel anything until I felt blood running down my leg. Does anyone recommend like wearing disposable underwear or a maxi pad every day? It just really freaked me out and I’m so afraid it’s going to happen again. I’m not sure what to do, if anything. Thanks!
