Product Spotlight: Diapers

This week's spotlight is on all things diapers! (I'm assuming zamoraspin is still on vacation)

For disposable, what brands did you use, what did you like and dislike?

Diaper pail recommendations, and their pros and cons:

If you used cloth diapers, what brands, and what advice, tips, or resources would you recommend?

As diapers are not cheap, how did you save money on diapers?

Re: Product Spotlight: Diapers

  • Really looking forward to this week’s product spotlight! If anyone has insight on cloth diapers please share! We really wanna try cloth diapers but willing to use disposables here and there for convenience. I’m leaning towards using Esembly but was given a stack of AlvaBaby pocket diapers to try.

  • We did disposable for my kids. I found we needed Pampers for premie/newborn stage, otherwise we had more leak accidents. But after that we switch to Target’s Up&Up store brand. Much less expensive and work just fine.

We never did diaper pails. Diapers either went in main garbage, or if it was especially smelly, straight outside.
  • So I had every intent of using cloth diapers, had all of them handed down from a friend, then once baby arrived and we were in the thick of it, that goal disappeared. I commend anyone who can do cloth.

We did disposable, pampers for newborn, then switched to Luvs, and then up and up for overnights.

For pail we have the Ubbi, I don't know that it's anything special, it holds dirty diapers and doesn't require special bags, and doesn't smell when shut.

Watch Target for deals, most of the time they have a circle deal of spend x in diapers, get x back. Amazon subscribe and save is sometimes good as well.
  • I want to do cloth and potentially found a service that will launder and provide fresh diapers (and cloth wipes) every week for $25 CAD. My friend has cloth diapers and swears by Nora’s nursery or apple cheeks.

Cloth diapers also have so many cute covers I may go a bit overboard.

If I can’t get the laundering service will likely go with disposables as I can’t imagine being a FTM and trying to figure it all out.

For diaper pails looking at a few but seems like hardly anyone actually uses them.
  • I commend anyone who does cloth, I simply couldn’t imagine trying to handle all that extra work with everything else that comes with having a baby.

We did disposables.  Based on conversations I’ve had with other mom friends, every baby seems to be a bit different in terms of which brand gives the best fit so you might want to hold off on stocking up.  We used pampers pure with my son when he was little then switched to pampers 360 fit once he started pulling up to stand.  My son was not one for laying still during diaper changes and the 360’s pull up like regular underwear which made things so much easier.

For diaper pail we have the Ubbi.  It uses regular trash bags, which is a huge cost saver,  and does a pretty good job with the smell too.
  • We did manage to do cloth diapers for the newborn stage. However - our daycare doesn't allow cloth diapers so we had to nix that once the LOs started there. It was too hard to try to do both. We used Kangacare brand which we loved.

A coworker clued me into dyper.com but they don't have their "re-dyper" program in my town yet.

As for disposables, we just used whatever was cheapest or on sale. The cheaper, generic ones didn't cut it for a while overnight (when they're still on a liquid diet and sleep for longer chunks), but other than that phase, we weren't picky!

Huggies all the way while they are primarily on their backs! They have a pocket in the back that’s effective for catching potential up-the-back blowouts. Pampers were too narrow for both our babies and I won’t bother this time around- also, no blowout pocket. After they are bigger/more upright/less incontinent we used the Kirkland (Costco) and Amazon Mama Bear without issue. Target or Luvs are ok in a pinch for older babies but you get what you pay for. Favorite nighttime are Honest- they absorbed the most for us. Loved Ubbi diaper pail for ease of use and bag changing but it STUNK!!! Used to air it out on our deck once a week and it was still god awful. Had better luck with the Dakor. But unless you’re taking it out every day or two it’s going to eventually stink.
