2nd Trimester

Umbilical hernia

Anyone else have an umbilical hernia? This is my 3rd pregnancy and I developed one after my last baby was born. It has started to be so painful if I lift anything or strain at all! If I pick up my 2 year old or if I strain even a little while going to the bathroom, I have excruciating pain for hours. I'm so worried about pushing a baby out! I can't imagine what will happen to the hernia 😱😱 My OB hasn't been very helpful, I don't think she knows much about it. She just referred me to general surgery for a consult for repair after the baby is here. Any insight or experience with giving birth with this? Or with the surgical correction? I'm nervous and I'm flaring this thing up constantly. Help! 😵‍💫

Re: Umbilical hernia

  • I’ve had an umbilical hernia since I was born but thankfully it has never been painful for me. I got it fixed/closed when I was 17 (about 10 years ago) and have also been worried about it now being pregnant. I’m pretty sure it reopened from all the bloating pressure when I was around 9weeks. I’m 24 weeks now and it’s definitely come back, thankfully no pain though. I told my midwife about my concerns at my 14 week appointment and it sounds like she had the same response as your OB.. basically said okay it shouldn’t be a problem and there’s nothing that can really be done. Since you’re in a lot of pain I would push for more answers and solutions with your OB :/

As for the repair, when I had mine it was a very quick procedure. I did mine with a plastic surgeon to avoid any scarring but I was awake the whole time and got to go home right after. Definitely not fun when the anesthesia wears off because it hurts to move anything with your ab muscles but some pain pills will do the trick! Not a long or hard recovery at all
