Question! Is it safe to manually move baby in the womb?

Hello there! This question is on behalf of my sister. She is 6 months pregnant and is underage. My mother wants to take her to a lady who does not have a medical license to manually position the baby head down. I’ve heard of this procedure but I’ve heard of it being done during the 8 or 9 month of pregnancy not 6. My sister is worried if it’s bad to do and she is being forced to go and I wanted feedback if it’s safe or unsafe so I can let our mother know ASAP. Thank you.

I don't think this is a good idea. From what I recall of my first pregnancy, it's normal for baby to be breech at six months. As the baby grows and there is less space, the most comfortable position will be head down, so they will probably move to that position by themselves as the due date approaches. Even when people are far along in pregnancy, I've heard it can be dangerous to move baby, and baby may flip back to the original position anyways. I definitely wouldn't do this without consulting your sister's OB, and I expect the doctor would say it's not safe or advisable.

  • My gut reaction is to say that this sounds like a really unsafe idea. Strongly encourage your Sister’s OB/Midwife be consulted. Manual turning (ECV?) is a procedure only some OBs are even qualified to do, and you’re right, it’s not till much further along in the 3rd trimester.
