Dh was laid off, now DD doesn't have insurance

I'm just so upset, my stomach aches. We have to apply for MN Care for her and of course she has an appointment next month for 9 months (thank god we did all her shots already) but it takes awhile for MN Care to be approved and even with that she will probably be denied cuz she's had health care coverage within the past 4 months, so she won't have insurance! I don't know what else to do. Looks like there will be lots of Ramen Noodles, cheap hot dogs and Mac n Cheese in my future! Not saying those are bad...

  • Oh and I can't get coverage for her through my job.

  • What about COBRA?

  • i am SO sorry honey.... how awful :(  is there any way you can cobra your DH's insurance while he looks for another job?  it is $$ to cobra but then she would be covered.  ugh, this economy is so scary... i am so sorry you're going through this.

  • That totally sucks.  I don't know anything about MN, but I know here they cannot be denied shots b/c there is no insurance.  Does the waiting period apply to infants and children????  If your DH was laid off, did he get a severence package?  I know you don't have shots at nine months, but perhaps by the next visit something can get worked out.  Talk to the pedi and let them know what is going on.  I am sorry.
  • I'm so sorry that your DH got laid off. I'm not sure about this, but even when you're laid off, doesn't the insurance run out at the end of the month? Maybe you can move your DD's appt to the end of this month instead so that it will be covered? I think there are other programs that can provide insurance for kids too, so check into everything. MN care goes off of your income and has the 4 month rule (have to be without insurance for 4 months), but there is also Medicaid (as horrible as that sounds) and I think that all kids are accepted no matter what, if they don't have insurance through a parents employer.
  • I would definitely check into COBRA and ask your place of employment again. This should be a qualifying event for you to make a change in your insurance. It doesn't have to be enrollment season. I'm so very sorry you're having to deal with this.  :(

  • Dh said COBRA is expensive, I haven't really talked to him about how much it is and right now he is sleeping. I asked MN Care about her and they said any previous visits to the Dr. will not be covered. I called her Dr. Office, and they are letting us come in on the 30th (since Dh's coverage ends at the end of this month). If she still doesn't have coverage by 12 months, we'll have to see what her Dr. says. Either way she is my #1 and she will be taken care of, if I have to miss a bill payment for her, I will do it!
  • Why can't you add her (and your dh for that matter) to your plan? Like Reem said, it is a qualifying event. Unless there is some reason they don't offer coverage to dependents, there is no reason you can't add them to your plan.
  • I can't add them cuz I'm only p/t. Thanks though, wish I could!

  • Not to beat a horse.. but the fact that you are part time should not matter.
  • I'm so sorry! I hope something will work out for you!
  • I am so sorry.  Have you looked into getting an individual policy for your DD?  When I quit my job COBRA was going to cost the 3 of us $1800 a month and I think around $500 for just DD.

I ended up getting DD individual major med coverage with HumanaOne for $195 month-not bad at all compared to what COBRA was going to cost.
