1st Trimester

Please help! Measuring behind

Hi all, really hoping someone can share some insights on my situation. I went in today for a second ultrasound and they said I’m only measuring 5 weeks (although I’m 100% positive I can’t be any less than 7 weeks.) They were able to find a yolk sac, gestational sac, fetal pole and tiny hint of an embryo, although too small to measure. They also found a tiny flicker of a heartbeat but it was really slow, I think they said 80BPM. Is it possible the growth is just slow and it will pick up speed or should I prepare myself for the worst? I know it’s not over until it’s over but what do you think the odds are that this turns out okay? Please be brutally honest, I can handle it.

Re: Please help! Measuring behind

  • The heartbeat appears to be within a normal range for a five week old embryo. One thought is you ovulated later than you thought and are actually only five weeks along instead of seven. How are your HCG levels?

@annie_g  I wish that was the case. It’s impossible that we conceived later than I thought because we didn’t have sex for 3 weeks afterwards due to our house getting covid and being apart from traveling. So I have to at least be 7 weeks. I know it’s so common for people’s dates to be off and I wish that was the case here but it can’t be. Do you know if it’s unusual for a baby to be 2 weeks behind and for growth to eventually pick up steam and be okay?

I got my hcg levels tested at 4 weeks and they were doubling nicely but I haven’t gotten them tested recently.
    4 weeks:

    Day 1: 465

    Day 2: 1122

    Day 3: 2269

  • Sperm can live I believe up to six days.

@roadspeckle right, but you can only ovulate around 2.5 days after a positive ovulation test, even if I round up to 3 or 4 days post positive test, I’d still be at least 7 weeks.
  • It's hard for anyone on here to give you a definitive answer on what's going on since none of us are your doctor. What did they say when you raised concerns about the baby measuring small?

Also, from reading other posts on here, some baby's measure small early on, but then catch up. Again though, you really should speak with your doctor about any concerns you have.

@annie_g my doctors were incredibly vague and basically just said we needed to do a follow up scan, which is true and I totally understand. But I think they deal with this all the time where people think they have their dates right, but really don’t. I should have shown them my tracking to show how certain I am by my dates but they rushed me out pretty quickly. I know I just have to give it time, I was just hoping maybe someone had experienced something similar that ended up okay ☺️
  • Hello, I went to my first scan was certain I was 7 weeks and 2 days and measured at 6 weeks 1 day in which I believe was the cause of my fibroids being in the way and maybe slowing baby down.. heart rate was good 120BPM. aand I am pretty sure of my dates as well. But as mentioned it definitely can be baby is small now and will develop at a more profound speed later... Good Luck to you!!!
  • with my with my first pregnancy, I estimated my due date to be July 28 (I was basal testing, ovulation kits, etc) but when I went to internal ultrasound, they had me weeks behind my DD speculation (EDD August 9). My daughter also came 9 days AFTER my new, later DD (one from doctor showing 2 weeks later).

    I think it is fine.
