AMH - Is this good / high ???

Hi - I learned my AMH is 3.97. I am almost 37 years old. Initially what I was reading made it sound like this is a great AMH, but then other things I found said that this type of AMH at my age puts me in the "probable PCOS" range? I haven't had anyone suggest PCOS and I don't have other symptoms of it.... Since I am starting IVF soon I also read it puts me at more of a risk of OHSS?

Hi @bluebird2392! I have mild PCOS and when I did my first of 2 egg retrievals at 37yo (1 month shy of 38 yo) my AMH was 4.56. Long story short, we created 4 genetically perfect embryos between the two cycles and I never went into OHSS. OHSS is more rare now with the improvements in medication.

There is the Rotterdam criteria to diagnose PCOS which is meeting 2 of the 3 listed criteria: irregular menstrual cycles, ovarian cysts found on an imaging study like an ultrasound, and/ or elevated testosterone/ dhea levels. There are other factors that is related to PCOS that are not currently included in the diagnostic criteria such as insulin resistance and hypothyroidism. The AMH lab test is not part of diagnosing PCOS.

One thing I will recommend is doing some preconception work to optimize the success of your egg retrievals at least 3 months prior. I like the book “It Starts With the Egg” by Rebecca Fett which uses practical,  science evidence based suggestions on how to prepare for pregnancy and optimize fertility with IVF.

I wish you health and success on your fertility journey. Stay strong fertility warrior! ❤️

  • Thanks and congrats on your 4 embryos!  I am actually scheduled for an egg retrieval in about a month so I don't have a three month time frame, however, about 2 months ago when I started going down this road I did make some healthy changes  - have been taking Coq10, prenatal vitamin,  cut out alcohol, reduced caffeine, have been trying to follow some of the recommended dietary changes, etc. Before the last couple months, I've been fairly healthy, always had good BMI, never smoked, etc. Hoping I've done enough to help things out!

That’s great! All of those changes will support a successful fertility journey. It’s never too late and every healthy action no matter how small counts! Best of luck!  ❤️
