What does your medical care look like?

Hi everyone,

I’m curious to know if you are having a midwife or physician(and what type) follow you on your journey. I live in Canada in an area where there are few doctors.  There are so few ob/gyns that they don’t deliver babies.  I don’t even have a family doctor.  There are some family practice doctors who take on maternity patients for their pregnancy and I was lucky enough to find one of these. (Well technically 2  doctors who share the practice so I’ll be seeing a different doctor depending on who is working)

Because of how busy they are I don’t have my first appointment until I’m already 9 weeks- and because of Covid It’s only a phone visit!

Also they are still restricting partners because of Covid. I’m worried my husband won’t be able to come to my first ultrasound appointment.

I would love to hear what your situation is like!

  • PS I’ve tried to update my name - on both here and the knot it says it’s changed but for some reason has stayed knottie ?

  • I will be using a midwife. I still have not chosen between two different midwives. With one I would have a home north and the other I would have a hospital birth. I’m going to meet them both in the next two weeks and then decide from there.
  • I’ll be using the same midwives I used for my first, and it’ll be at a hospital. My first appt is at nine weeks too, but it’s in person and my spouse is allowed to come.

  • I have an OB that will be delivering the baby at the hospital. I have yet to call and schedule the first appointment but I imagine it should be around 8-10 weeks. I'm only 4+2 now. I'm thankful that my husband is allowed to come to all appointments with me.

I have an OB to deliver at the hospital. I actually just changed my medical insurance and dropped by OB because they deliver about an hour from my home and they aren’t allowing partners for visits. My boyfriend missed so many appointments for my first pregnancy due to Covid and I don’t want that to happen again. I’m scared to try something new but I don’t want to be an hour away from my toddler, pets, and home when I deliver. I also used a doula last time, highly recommend this and plan to do it again!
  • I have an OB that will deliver at a hospital. I'm in the US and on a different insurance plan than I was with my first two kids so it's a different hospital than I've been to before, but my OB is the same that I've had for the last 5 years so that's nice. My first appointment and ultrasound is at the end of the month when I'll be 7w5d. They are allowing one person with me.

And @sprout1234 your new name updated. :)

@mrs-kay929 That’s so wonderful. For now my husband is only allowed to come to my 3rd appointment.

@lulam13 I am looking into doulas but again right now I think for my birth I’m only allowed 1 support person

  • My primary doctor is a family doctor who works with people through the lifespan. I have been going to her for the first few weeks here for bloodwork and my first appointment but I am going to use a CPM to try for a homebirth. This midwife I found is realistic with it being my first baby and we have a back up plan of going to the hospital and delivering with my family doctor.
  • @knottie4854737935e3fa1e that’s great you get the best of both worlds!
  • Hoping to do a home birth this time around, so I’ll be seeing a midwife (but have to see an OB for my first appt per state regulations). Hoping it works out bc the drive to the birth center was the worst part of my birth experience the first time around.
  • I'm in the city now but I'll be moving an hour away in the country where there are no high risk OBGYN folks. I'll have to commute to appts. But its plenty of room for me and baby.
  • @sprout1234 Where in Canada are you?
We're in rural Alberta (closest city is Fort Sask or Edmonton) and we have a few OBs and midwives around us.
My family doctor (who is freaking amazing) will be my doctor until I decide how we're proceeding. I'm trying to convince hubby that midwife and hospital water birth is the way I want to go.
  • If I can get cleared as not being high risk I'll deliver at home with a midwife
  • @icesprincess is this your first? Are your support people all on board?
  • @mitchip I live in Victoria, BC. Not rural by any means, we have a major doctor shortage problem! I think it’s a little easier to get a midwife but I’ve heard they are also struggling to keep up with demand.
  • This is my 2nd and my mama is on board. I dunno about Dad yet but my hospital experience with my first was nightmare fuel so I refuse to do it again.
  • I live on the east coast of Canada and have access to a family doc and an OB. While
not everyone has access to a GP, when pregnant, everyone gets in to an OB. OBs and midwives both deliver where I live. My first two kids were delivered by a midwife at home and I’m hoping it’s the same for our third. I’m high risk for a few reasons so I will be seen at our specialty hospital and that means I will have multiples tests and ultrasounds before 15 weeks. It’s great free care. My first kid was not high risk and I think I had an ultrasound at 12 weeks and 20 weeks.
  • I'm having my first and am working with a fantastic midwife.  I'll be having a home birth and will rent a water birthing pool.  I'm really grateful that I found a highly qualified midwife.   I'm 47 and was worried that no midwife would be willing to do a home birth just bc of my age.  I live in Brooklyn, NY so had more choices than I would have elsewhere.  The only downside is that it's about $6,000 out of pocket to deliver at home (that includes all my prenatal care) whereas a hospital birth would be fully covered.   Which is crazy bc the actual cost of a home birth is way cheaper.  I'm not going to have a doula and will cut other expenses to make this work.  I will be able to have my sister, best friends, and mom at my birth and so I will have many supports.

  • I am from Massachusetts and this one will be my first. I will be delivering at a local hospital.  I am lucky that it is 15 minutes from my home and top rated.  We are going with this option because I have a slightly bicornuate uterus. There might be a need for a c-section if we have a breech baby because if this.
  • @mle12345 That's awesome! I had a homebirth with my first and I really enjoyed it!
  • I did a homebirth with my first with midwives. I absolutely lived the experience, but I want a little more security this time so I'm going to deliver with nurse midwives at a birth center. Where I live nurse midwives are not allowed to do home deliveries and I also have a very neurotic chihuahua who does not like people in the house, so I think a birth center would be more relaxing.

I started my care with an ob at 6w5d, while I confirmed the viability and I transferred over to the midwives this week at 12w1d. I'm also seeing a perinatologist at 11w, 16w, 18w, 19w, & 20w to monitor my cervix because I had 2 LEEPs and a d&c due to a mmc, all in 2020. I'm so excited to give birth at the birth center!

Since the baby was conceived through IUI, we saw my OB’s nurse practitioner so it was an easy transition. We were supposed to see him for next steps since our current IUI protocol wasn’t successful. That appointment ended up being our confirmation of pregnancy appointment at 3w5d.

He follows me through my pregnancy along with MFM since I’m high risk. He’ll delivery my baby or do the c-section at the local hospital. The hospital also has a new maternity and childrens facility. They allow my husband in the appointments with me for every appointment.
  • @lulam13 any suggestions to ask doulas when interviewing them?
are you comfortable sharing the price range you paid?

we are doing a hospital birth but would love to hire a doula to support us as this is our first.

@henn204 congrats!! I’m so glad IUI worked. IVF worked for us and we are beyond grateful!

  • @santababy2022 thank you so much! Congratulations to you on your successful IVF! 😊
