Babies: 9 - 12 Months

47 weeks old and still not putting food in mouth!

Hi ~ I am a first time mom, and my son will almost be 11 months old and he is still not feeding himself 😕 He is able to pick up the food(s), but as soon as I guide his hand toward his mouth, he either drops it or resists?! Should I be super concerned?? He also refuses to hold his own bottle…even if it’s a sippy cup. Again, he can pick up his sippy cup, but resists or drops it when I guide it to his mouth. ANY advice?!? Thank you in advance!

Re: 47 weeks old and still not putting food in mouth!

  • So I had the same problem with my son. I would put food in front of him or a sippy cup and he would look at me like “what do you want me to do with this?” I thought it was a sensory thing because he would gently touch food with his fingers but do nothing else. So I continued to feed him purées. I consistently put cheerios in front of him and EVENTUALLY he got the hang of putting cheerios in his mouth but nothing else. So mama, I completely understand your frustration (I am a first time mom too). Eventually my son had his 9 month check up (even though he was closer to 10 months) and I got some tough love from my pediatrician. She told me my son wasn’t starving (he was exactly where he needed to be weight wise) and that I needed to plop some infant friendly food in front of him and leave him alone. I would say it took about a day of putting meals in front of him before he got the idea that he needed to feed himself. He was getting his nutrients from formula (of course that’s hard to come by right now) so he would be fine. Your son just needs to get a piece of food in his mouth all by himself for him to get the idea. I tried guiding too thinking he needs to be taught but these little humans can teach themselves a lot all on their own. I know it will be hard but give it a try. Do a day of just putting meals in front of your son and see what he does. It may take a completely mess and only two bites of food but your baby will get it quickly!! Just to give you some perspective, my son has only been feeding himself for a month. So I totally get it!!
