Stubborn baby for anatomy scan

I just had my 20 week anatomy scan, and the baby wouldn't move! He was moving his hands and legs, opening his mouth, but wouldn't flip his body the way the sonography needed. She pushed and jiggled my belly for a long time, had me turn left, right, back--all multiple times. She finally got most pictures she needed but not a certain one. She checked with the doctor, and they said it was fine, no need to return. However, I'm left worrying about the lack of movement. I suffer from anxiety and "confirmation bias" that goes along with it. So now I'm thinking, maybe this is why I can barely feel baby move (and not just my anterior placenta). I've also compared previous ultrasounds, and he's always in the same exact position. Come to think of it, they said he was stubborn last time too, but didn't try so hard as it was only an early scan (16 weeks) and they knew I'd have another one.

I wish I drank something sugary before I went, now that I'm reading it would be helpful. So I'm wondering if the opposite is true--would low blood sugar cause a sluggish baby? I didn't eat a lot today and was actually kind of hungry during the scan. Could that be it? What does it mean if the baby is never moving very much? The baby is also breech (every time), and the sonographer said, oh he probably flips back and forth all the time. And I said, no he is always in this position at U/S. She sort of seemed surprised.

Anyone with similar experience?

Your anterior placenta would definitely mute your baby’s movements. As for movement in general, they sleep a lot. If you do have a future scan and want to see some movement a little sugar can help. Overall though if your doctor isn’t worried try to out your mind at rest. If you can’t do that talk to your doctor about handling your anxiety.

  • I had quite a few ultrasounds and he always seemed to be pretty quiet for them (like you mentioned- hands and feet moving, but generally pretty stationary).  He would always be sleeping for the appointments my husband went to.  I also had an anterior placenta and felt very little movement throughout my whole pregnancy.  Hope that provides some reassurance, but you can always contact your doctor if you are concerned.
