Prenatal Vitamins- MTHFR- Possible TW due to mention of loss

Hello Ladies, I literally just got my very unexpected, unplanned BFP today. I am still processing it but have a lot of trauma associated with pregnancy so I am really needing an answer to this long before any appointment lol. I have recurrent pregnancy loss- typically around 6 weeks- MTHFR mutation, and lots of other health complications. I have two live children, each pregnancy had been high risk w complications and preterm labor, and have had 3 losses. I found out about the MTHFR when I was working w a reproductive endocrinologist prior to conceiving my oldest. My question is.. it’s been 5 years since I was last pregnant- any recommendations for prenatal vitamins that support this mutation.. meaning I am going to need twice as much folic acid at least as a woman who does not have this mutation.. looking for personal experiences, recommendations.. TIA.

  • *I'm not a medical professional at all* but they sell just folic acid tabs that you could possibly take in conjunction with your vitamins. Also lots of fruits and veggies have folic acid in them.

  • Due to an issue on my husband's side of the family, one of our doctors had recommended we go ahead and just take extra folic acid on top of my prenatal vitamin during my last pregnancy.
  • I hear if you get a prenatal with folate instead of folic acid it’s better.  people with MTHFR absorb folate easier than folic acid.
  • I use whole earth and sea pure food prenatals and it has 700mcg of folate which is 175% of the daily value. Look up folate vs folic acid. I really think with MTHFR you should be taking folate instead of folic acid because the problem is your body struggles to convert folic acid into folate or something like that.
  • I’ve not been diagnosed with MTHFR, but I have PCOS and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis both of which have been correlated with MTHFR so I preemptively chose a prenatal with folate instead of folic acid. I take Smarty Pants prenatal. They have capsules or gummies. I’ve tried both but prefer the gummies as they taste better and I am not anemic so I don’t necessarily need the iron.
  • Hi- pharmacist here. You will need folate instead of folic acid. Folate is the “active” form of folic acid that your body actually needs. With MTHFR, you will not convert folic acid to folate. My recommendation is that any pregnant person should look for folate instead of folic acid in their prenatal. Foods like avocados and berries are also a good source of folate. I’ve taken both Ritual (supplement this with additional choline) and Seeking Health Optimal Prenatal - both have optimal forms of folate in them!
  • I recently read that chlorella contains a good amount of folate, maybe that would help you. I do know that chlorella tablets taste and smell like fish food though, so you may want to take it with a strong flavored something to mask the taste.
