ADHD Moms?

Anyone else struggling with adjusting to pregnancy with ADHD? Love to hear from anyone on their experiences, past or present…did you continue meds, and if so how did everything turn out? If not, how did you cope, and when did you restart? Thank you!

Re: ADHD Moms?

  • Hi! I have ADHD, diagnosed after my second kid was born. I've stopped meds (Adderall) both times now, and honestly, it's been much more of a dog this time then last time. I'm executive function is the pits, and my overall mood suffers when I'm not getting things done, so it's a vicious cycle.

With my son, I was cleared to start my meds back up at 2 months -- minimal transfer in breastmilk. It was such a relief to have dopamine again, lol. My doctor has said this pregnancy that if I hit a point that I feel like my day to day life is suffering enough to offset the (likely small but still unknown) risk of taking Adderall during pregnancy, that we can revisit it. Some folks definitely choose to do so!

  • I have too been struggling with this! I have been on medication for about 10 years now! When I got pregnant my primary care doctor told me to quit taking it! (Vyvanse) I felt completely fine for about 2 weeks, but now I am at week 11 and am finding it super hard to stay on task, especially at work. My days used to fly by because I was focused and busy all day! Now I feel like my days take so long! I hope to get back on mine around 12 weeks postpartum when I go back to work! Hang in there! You aren't alone!
  • Thanks ladies, really appreciate the feedback and support!
  • I have heard such good things about Vyvanse — I wish my insurance covered it because apparently, it also helps with BED, which I struggle with alongside (as a result of? who knows! ) the ADHD. I've been taking Adderall on and off since 2019, and it's worked well for me.
  • Vyvanse has been a game-changer for sure—Shire offers a manufacturer’s discounts, that’s the only way I can afford it every month! Prior to TTC, I supplemented with Adderall for extra long work days, but stopped in anticipation of pregnancy.
  • I was diagnosed 3 months before I found out I was pregnant. My life improved so much with concerta. My doctor advised me to stop taking my meds. It’s been about two weeks and I am struggling.

I hear you…for sure. I tried just stopping altogether while TTC and it was disastrous. I restarted at a lower dose, and I’m doing a slow taper now, but still struggling quite a bit.
