Fetal assessment vs Ultrasound

We had IVf done with PGT-A and used a perfect embryo 😁. My OB said I won’t have to get any genetic testing done since they’ve tested the embryo already. Was waiting to hear about my fetal assessment but was told by the receptionist that I’m only getting an ultrasound (week 20). And not everyone gets the fetal assessment. What’s the difference? Thanks

Hi!  I believe someone started a thread about genetic testing and it sounds like your question would be perfect to ask over there.   You can also ask your question in your weekly check in that's organized by due date.  Thanks for helping keep the board organized!

  • What do you mean by fetal assessment? I have not heard that term. It’s not uncommon to have a dating ultrasound early on, but since you did IVF, you know exactly when you got pregnant and don’t need that.

Be happy! Not needing extra attention means things are progressing normally, and you’re low risk so far. That’s a good thing.

Oh yes, definitely happy that I’m low risk, considering my age and IVF. But i keep hearing fetal assessment around wk 20 and not sure what the difference is. Thanks

    Thanks!
  • I'm not sure I've heard the term fetal assessment, but everyone at around week 20 will have an anatomy scan. It's more in depth than a regular ultrasound, and they will check all of the organs to make sure they're working and in the proper place, all of the bones with growth plates (arms and legs) to make sure they're growing correctly, and things like the abdominal and head circumference to make sure there's no problems like microcephaly.
From my little bit of googling it does seem that fetal assessment is used interchangeably with anatomy scan or to mean an NST (where they strap you up for a bit and monitor babies heart rate and movements)

Ok, so yea, the 20-week ultrasound is different from most other ultrasounds. A dating ultrasound is pretty quick. Usually not more than 5 minutes. Sometimes, you’ll have ultrasounds to check the position if it can’t be easily assessed by feel. Sometimes, there are scans to guess the baby’s size later on (these are pretty inaccurate but are becoming more common despite that). All of these are pretty quick.

The anatomy scan can take close to an hour and includes lots of close up looks and entailed measurements of the heart, brain, head, leg bones, belly, mouth, and a host of other things.

Yes, it takes place around week 20 and likely won’t be scheduled for awhile yet.
