Bump feelers & commenters

I’m 16 weeks and starting to show. I’ve already had unsolicited hands on my belly and comments “lift your shirt let me see” and “you’ve got a belly!” I got “your dog is gaining weight like his mom” and Someone even greeted me “hey fatty!” (I know these people well and know they mean well but…cringe).

Anyway — how do you feel about comments/hands on belly and if you don’t like it what do you say to people? I personally am annoyed by it (not sure why) & I know it’s only going to get worse lol.

Re: Bump feelers & commenters

  • If you didn’t put it there, don’t touch it.

That usually makes people think before touching you. I also physically act uncomfortable. My family isn’t touchy feely or overly affectionate so I only had a couple people touch me and I didn’t mind too much. The comments never bothered me from my family but what did bother me is when strangers would tell me I’m “about to pop” or ask if it’s twins. I started telling people “no I’m just fat” at that point because why would you say that?!?

The good news is it doesn’t last forever and before you know it, you’ll be holding this baby and this won’t even be something you think about anymore (unless prompted by a bump post 😅).

  • My go-to response is “please give me some space.” It reminds people that you’re still a person, not just a baby bump. And act offended. That puts the shame on them, not you. They’re the ones being rude for trying to touch you and offering rude comments. You’re not rude for not putting up with it.
  • The only people that ever touched my bump are friends or family and i never cared about that. But if it does bother you i would probably take a quick step back as they touch you. They will most likely feel bad and apologize and you can just be honest and say you’d prefer people don’t touch.

As for comments people can definitely be rude unintentionally. I think we’re also much more sensitive with our changing bodies at this time so we definitely don’t want to hear anything even slightly rude. My own dad told me i looked like i had a watermelon in me and i started crying lol i also gave birth the next day so he wasn’t wrong! 😂
  • Touch (and possibly rub) their bellies too, then they feel weird and get the message.
