Re: GTKY 4.26

  • I can't think of the worst one ever. The most recent one that made me feel bad for being ungrateful was a moravian star. I've wanted an authentic moravian star light fixture for years. My older sister remembered this and got me a plastic, assemble it yourself moravian star off amazon with a cord 1.5 ft long to put in my office. It's so cheap though that it just doesn't have the feel and almost ruins it for me. I feel horrible for not loving it, and I recently donated it, but I do love that she tried to make it happen for me!

  • Ummm a naked woman holding a baby ceramic for my garden... That was from my husband's aunt. Same aunt got me a faux fur jacket. Like knee length.

One time when I was younger, my MIL got me two fishnet looking neon green and pink sweaters. The moment I opened them my husband looked at her and said you're returning those.

We have a regift box that accumulated many gifts over the years, I also donate most of the gifts MIL gives me for clothing. She can't find the right size ever.... Like she'll gift me in the same year, a xxxl and a xs... Neither of which are my size.
  • My mom came home from a work trip once with gifts for me and my brother. He got the new video game he’d been asking for. I got a book on your changing body and periods. Talk about a letdown! My family is kinda sarcastic and me, my dad, and brother all mocked the gift at the time and we still laugh about it now.
  • I genuinely think I've liked/found value in every weird thing I've gotten. It's like the fact that it's a gift makes even the tackiest thing super sentimental to me like immediately lol so I can't really pick a worst gift!
  • My personal favorite was the year my ex-MIL got me a miniature nativity set, an agora sweater, and the Joy of Cooking.  I'm not Christian (and neither was my ex-husband), allergic to angora, and (at the time - more than 20 years ago) really did not enjoy cooking.

One year for valentine's day, instead of getting me a bouquet of flowers, my husband got me daisies in a plastic pot from the hardware store. Photo in spoiler if what it looked like, but in a black plastic pot. Normally I'm with @ashking0922that I find joy in every present, but I still cannot find joy in a plastic bucket of weeds.

  • A long sleeved white shirt with a pretty monogram out of silver sequins. I never even wore it once, I knew if I ever tried to leave the house in it I would stain it before arriving at my destination!
    First time mom-to-be, due 9/25/22

Some complicated chromosomal stuff going on - our fingers are crossed, but this may not go according to plan!

  • @wiseh I am cracking up at that! Sounds like something my husband would do. The good intention is there, but....my goodness haha
  • @laj0217 I think my step mom might have gotten me the same book for Christmas one year…opened it for the of our entire family 🙃

In general I think the worst gift I’ve ever gotten was fireplace matches from my aunt. I was 20, at college and living in my first apartment that most certainly didn’t have a fireplace.
  • @lucyg00cy I would have been mortified at that age!!
  • I can’t think of a gift I thought was terrible but for years my grandmother would buy me clothes that I would never even consider wearing. Now she does it for my daughter and unborn baby. I think what makes me frustrated is that I know financially she doesn’t have extra money to blow and it’s always items she can’t return!

And actually now that I think about it, my birth dad has some serious mental health issues so he’s always been high functioning but has strange behaviors. When I was around 7-10 every year on my birthday he would mail me a small Crystal animal figurine. Before he mailed it though he would paint it with cheap craft paint so it looked like one of those handmade kid crafts. I was always a good sport about it considering it was once of the least strange things he did and I always knew it came from a good place.
  • My husband's aunt is quite adorable and quirky. She's also Filipino and hard to understand in her age, her accent is thick and she prefers to speak with my MIL in Tagalog (language in the Philippines). However, she's super sweet and thoughtful, always has trinkets to give to my SILs and our kiddos. Trinkets, while thoughtful, usually consist of handmade jewelry made from shark teeth or very gaudy costume necklaces. The best one though, was a miniature stuffed mermaid with yarn hair and plastic beads for boobs. Me and my two SILs each got one in a different color. The trinkets for the kiddos is always - ALWAYS - a small Sunny-D bottle filled with nickels.
  • @laj0217 in hindsight it’s so funny, but at the time I was like WTF you’re the worst step mom (which she actually was, but now my dad is remarried to a literal saint so it all worked out! 😂)
  • I can't think of a worst gift but when I was little my paternal grandparents would always send big boxes of random stuff for Christmas. My name is Macie and I don't think they ever spelt it right. My dad is 21 years older than my mom so these grandparents were way older and lived on the other side of the country. By the time my brother and I came along all of our cousins were adults and I think they were over gift giving lo!
  • Not for me, technically, but when we got married, my FIL gave my husband this awful, beat up… I can only call it a prostitute barbie. It’s kind of a bit to pass it on and she’s still in one if our drawers, and I won’t get rid of her, but she’s just hideous and kind of disturbing to look at.
  • @costaricamom the not having money and refusing to return it I think frustrates me the most about MIL. We pay for her internet she cell phone, and she's always crying poverty over something to my husband and BIL, but then she mails us packages ($15 shipping at least, why not buy online?) of clothes from Walmart that I wouldn't put my kids in. (give me the solid color granimals any day, not the cheetah print lime green) and then also stuff it with dollar store toys and candy that will be thrown out. One time she went out and bought us an AC unit for our livingroom, we had been looking for one and couldn't find one, but then BIL said he had extras at his house and would bring us one. We left for a couple days and come home to all of our windows open and a $400 AC unit blowing in our livingroom. My husband was furious. Called her and demanded she meet us at the store she bought it and return it right away, lectured her about her crying poverty and how could she afford this, she held up a credit card and he lost it even more.
