Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Monitors

  • We have the vava monitor and love it! It does not use wifi, and has a good quality picture! Would definitely recommend it!

Your mileage may vary, but we went all-audio for our monitor, and use Vtech DM221. It's great. I personally can tend to be a little obsessive, and I had friends who would just like sit and stare at their baby monitors and fuss over sleeping positions, etc. I figured I was better off with less information, and people 5 or 10 years ago got by fine with audio-only, so I wasn't quite sure the video was necessary. Plus, it was way cheaper. But I think that was pretty specific to me and my personality.

ETA: The one time I think the video would have been useful is during sleep training. My daughter would just wake up and howl all of a sudden, and I would think "oh no her arm is trapped in the crib rails" or something, and it never was, she just woke up and wanted to be held. The video probably would have helped with that specific situation, but that was like 2 or 3 nights out of the past 2.5 years.

Also-- just a general recommendation for all things-- we used wirecutter's reviews and found them to be pretty foolproof. Lucie's list (no paywall) can also be helpful, but wirecutter really does a ton of testing, and I think the $20 or whatever for the year is totally worth it if you're trying to figure out baby gear.

  • We have an infant optics one and recommend it. It’s just local and has video

we also now use a Wyze camera In our sons room that we have on a secured network with 2 factor authentication. They’re cheap and it’s nice because I have Audio and video that I can see from my phone but just as needed. I am so sensitive to any noise he makes that I couldn’t handle a constant audio to his room, especially if he wakes and cry’s and falls back asleep on his own (we started this maybe when he was 2?) we currently have the infant optics one In the hall outside his room because if he really needs us then he comes out of his room and I hear that. Not sure what we’ll do in that sense once baby comes, although if he screams loudly enough it wakes me up even without the monitor for how our rooms are arranged.

Also - we started using the Hatch rest as an okay to wake clock for our toddler and it has been awesome. They have one with an audio monitor as well and I think I’m considering getting a second and maybe just using that for the nursery
  • We got the HelloBaby monitor. I figured this one wasn’t that much more expensive than a plain old audio one these days, so might as well go with video. Plus a bunch of the other mom’s in my old BMB recommended this brand. I ultimately went with this one because it had VOX (voice activated alert), but I honestly have never used that setting lol. I’ve never tried anything else so I don’t know if there’s something better out there, but I have no complaints (especially for the price, which I feel like is always something I’m saying lol).

  • We use the Wyze cameras in both of our daughter’s rooms. They’re cheap and the video quality it pretty good. When they were babies and with this new baby, we will use the Angel Care monitor with the sensor that goes under their mattress. We’ve not experienced issues with sensitivity except for one time when I’d changed the sheets on the mattress and moved the sensor and the baby rolled too far away from it (so it didn’t detect movement and went off).

I also have a cheap video monitor that I got at Aldi that we use when we travel.
  • We have infant optics video monitors in both our toddlers rooms right now and have been happy with how they've held up for 4+ years. Had to replace the battery once but it can still hold a charge. We also bought an audio only monitor at a garage sale for traveling but occasionally will pack video one instead
  • Bumping up this thread now that I'm actually looking for a moniter. I'm looking for one that I can view via my phone. I have Blink for my son's playroom but I don't like that I can't just keep viewing it for as long as I want. It cuts off after like 15 seconds and asks if I'm still watching. Any suggestions for a monitor around $100 or less that I can view and hear from my phone for as long as I have the app open?
  • @stardustskies look into Wyze cameras - not a baby speciic monitor but pretty affordable and has good audio/video quality - view via app only though
  • @runnergirl2018 thank you! That actually looks perfect for what I need.
