MaryJane

Recreational/medicinal marijuana user here! I stopped completely when I found out I was pregnant but wondering if anyone has read about or had experience with the use of topicals/edibles during pregnancy. All the “research” is like we don’t know so you’re on your own lol

    Why risk it?

  • It’s the most effective treatment for my motion sickness, insomnia, and anxiety.
  • If you’re consuming THC/CBD in any way it can cross the placenta, so it doesn’t really matter if it was smoked or eaten or absorbed through the skin.

I just stopped my anxiety med so I feel you with the concern about managing symptoms while pregnant. I hope you can find an anti-nausea treatment that works for you (ginger has been disappointing me so far, but lots of small snacks have helped). 💗
  • It’s also worth noting that your doctor will do a drug test at your first appointment and in the end of your pregnancy. And as needed if you come up positive for something… That could get child protective services involved, especially if it’s illegal in your state but even otherwise.
Plus as mentioned, it passes the placenta so why risk it?
  • I was a daily user up until I found out I was pregnant. It was how I managed chronic stomach issues and anxiety. I've done lots of research in regards to marijuana and pregnancy and since it's not legal yet there's just not enough studies on it. For me personally, knowing no matter what you do or don't do there's a chance of miscarriage (especially the first trimester) I don't want any reason to blame myself if I was to lose the baby. I started with unmanageable nausea at week six and was prescribed diclegis which has been my saving grace and it's been studied more than mj and is basically the medical drug for bad morning sickness. As for the anxiety I've been doing a lot more guided meditations on Spotify. Hope this helps!
  • Just want to add that whether or not they drug test at that first appointment, don’t be afraid to be honest about your use. OBGYNs are so experienced with working with patients who didn’t know they were pregnant and smoked or drank or ate lots of tuna or drank lots of caffeine, etc. They shouldn’t be blaming you for any of those reasons, but they should want to know to help you manage the pregnancy well moving forward.
  • With my first pregnancy my doctor told me that once my baby's lungs were starting to develop then I seriously needed to quit. But that was back in 2005. Honestly ask your OBGYN and hopefully they will help you quit the way my doctor did.
  • Minus the PTSD, I’m in a similar boat. Although now at 8 weeks, the smell of MJ has been making me gag uncontrollably. My partner and I are / were daily, multiple times a day, MJ users. He is still using semi regularly. In the first few weeks, I’d take a hit and thatd be my hit for the day, but as of lately, I can barely sit outside with him and keep him company. I know a good amount of cannababies (people who were born to MJ users during pregnancy) and they are great healthy humans! But I agree, to each their own, especially in a world where there isn’t much info on the situation.

I would suggest talking to your doctor about getting on a medication that will help with the PTSD and anxiety. I was on Effexor, which can cause birth defects and complications, and when my husband and I decided to start “trying,” my dr switched me to Lexapro to help with my PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder, and it has been great so far. I was a daily medical marijuana user as well, I have my license, but stopped completely when I found out I was pregnant. I actually can’t stand the smell of it right now, which has helped, but I strongly suggest talking to your dr or psychiatrist about what you can take that will help. Of course, there are always risks to taking medication, but studies show that if you have taken anxiety/depression meds and stop taking them because your pregnant and just “deal” with the symptoms and they are bad (mine would be) it can actually be more detrimental to your baby. We’ve got to look out for ourselves, just as much as we look out for our growing baby. Being healthy mentally is just as important as eating healthy, getting our steps in, cutting back on coffee, no cigarettes or alcohol, etc. just talk to your doc (primary care) and see what they say. Also: go to this link to do some research for yourself: https://womensmentalhealth.org or if you don’t want to get into the weeds for looking at research studies (I find them interesting but it’s not for everyone) go to this site for quick answers and current research findings: https://mothertobaby.org/
As for the medical marijuana, I would suggest slowly weaning off completely. There’s just not enough research out there, and since most people still see it as a “drug” there’s a lot of conflicting info. I wish you all the best!

  • I have an incredible doula here in CO that is actually trained in CBD & THC therapy throughout pregnancy. She has given me all of my traditional & holistic options knowing my background of physical/mental/sexual trauma. No one should shame you for choosing a more natural method to mental & physical health. Be open & honest but protect yourself if needed in your state 🤍🤰🏼🛀🏼 #currentlysoakingin50mgofhomegrowncbd
  • @knottiecd09aa4d3e0dbecf just because its "natural" doesn't always mean its safe.  Just saying.
  • @knottie Just because it’s something that grows doesn’t mean it’s safe to use during pregnancy 🤷🏼‍♀️ #thathashtagthough
