Increasing milk supply

My baby is a month old and I’m still having to supplement my milk supply. How do I increase my supply?!

Re: Increasing milk supply

  • I used ambitious kitchen's recipe for lactation cookies, and I find a cookie per pumping session helps rebuild supply by 30-40 additional mils, but every time I drink a body armor I can get an additional 80-100 mils. The combination is the only way I can even pump close to what my baby asks for. I drink about 3-5 body armours a day.
Plus at least 500 mils of water for mama per pumping session. I need all these to make enough milk.

  • Milk production is a supply and demand system. That is the key concept to remember. In order to get more supply, you must create more demand. You can do this in a few ways. Tried and true methods include putting the baby to the breast more often and pumping more often (look up power pumping, which mimicks cluster feeding). Of course, you must have something available to pump, so good nutrition and hydration are important. But most of all, remember that empty breasts fill more often, so empty them often. Any time your baby takes formula, you'll want to pump as well. Hope this helps. I have a 5 week old baby at home, we are still supplementing at times. Don't stress. That will help things flow too. :)
  • Pump and breastfed more. There's no miracle product.  I eat oatmeal everyday just bc it says oatmeal is good but a good milk supply comes over time not over night.  Start letting baby breastfed as much and as often as possible.  If baby isn't latching order nipple shields on Amazon.  They're a life saver! But I guarantee once you are feeding more your supply will increase..remember itsnsupply and demand..YOU and baby need to TELL your body you need more l. Do not skip feedings and do not skip pumping. If you have to pump at 3am you have to pump at 3am! Give it time but have baby feed on the nip as much as possible.  Good luck!
  • Incorporate a power pump session once a day
  • So while your pumping, you'll eat a cookie and drink a body armor and by next pump session you'll see an increase?
  • I know this posts a bit old, but replying in case it's helpful to others in the future. My LO had trouble breastfeeding at first (we finally got it after 2 weeks of trying!) and my supply dipped in the meantime. I did a combination of power pumping twice a day (along with regular pumps) and ate one serving of Munchkin Milkmakers Lactation Cookie Bites each day and my supply increased quite a bit in one week! I suspect the power pumping was the biggest factor, but at least the cookies were pretty tasty!
  • 100% agree with the supply and demand principle. Seems like milk supply is a common concern among us moms - I wish this was more widely discussed to help us prepare! Like many, I supplemented with formula but didn’t realize we have to pump and/or continue to put baby to the breast to build up supply at the same time. Perhaps the cookies or other goodies do work but supply and demand is key. We got this!
